Rapper Eminem’s Mom, Debbie Nelson, Dead At 69
Debbie Nelson, the mother of rapper Marshall Bruce Mathers III, better known as Eminem, has passed away at the age of 69. Nelson’s passing takes place following a lung cancer diagnosis. Over the years, Nelson and her son’s relationship had been profiled in various media.
Nelson Received A Lung Cancer Diagnosis Back In September
It’s believed that Nelson’s cause of death was lung cancer. She had been diagnosed back in September.
At the time of her diagnosis, it was believed that Nelson didn’t have much time to live. According to TMZ, she passed away last night in St. Joseph, Missouri.
According to In Touch, following her diagnosis, a source shared that that, “There [were] not many options [for Debbie].” It was also noted that she was “currently staying between the cancer center and with family members. She has a very limited amount of time left.” The source also noted that Eminem was financially supporting his mother.
Throughout his early career, as TMZ noted, the rapper often alleged his mother was neglectful and abusive. This notably served as the basis for the track,”Cleanin’ Out My Closet.”
For her part, Debbie sued him for defamation back in 1999. She would also write her own memoir, My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem. Notably, at the time, she alleged the defamation suit was in part meant to stop a foreclosure on her house.
The Rapper & His Mother Have Made Various Attempts At Reconciling Over The Years
In the ongoing years, Nelson and her son have made various attempts at a reconciliation. As TMZ noted, their relationship appeared to improve over the years.
This was notably reflected in Eminem’s 2013 release, “Headlights,” in which he shared regret over things he said at apologized for their relationship. For her part, Nelson also congratulated her son during his 222 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

As People also noted, in a video, Debbie was quoted as saying, “Marshall, I want to say, I could not let this day go by without congratulating you on your induction into the Hall of Fame.”
“I love you very much. I knew you’d get there. It’s been a long ride…I’m very, very proud of you.”
The rapper’s estranged father, Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr., also passed away in 2019. He was 67 at the time of his death.
Nelson was 18 years old at the time she gave birth to the future rapper in 1972. She and Eminem’s father were high-school sweethearts who married in 1970. However, they also divorced shortly ater the rapper’s birth.
