American Idol fans are not happy after seeing the latest promo for the returning singing reality TV series. Carrie Underwood is replacing Katy Perry as a judge this season and has helped promote the new season. However, when it ended and the new premiere date was revealed, fans thought it was coming too late.

Here is what you need to know about the next American Idol season.

American Idol Coming Back Later Than Normal

For the last five years, American Idol has premiered every season in the middle of February. Before that, it premiered at the start of March in Seasons 16 and 17. Every season before that (other than the first) premiered in January. Fans have gotten used to January or February starts for the show, but that won’t happen this season.

Next year, American Idol will be back for Season 23 on March 9, 2025. This is around the same date that Season 16 and Season 17 premiered. Those two seasons kicked off on March 11 and March 3. However, other than the first season (June), Season 23 will be the second latest date the show has ever premiered.

While fans love Carrie Underwood replacing Katy Perry, they are not all on board with the later date.

Fans Don’t Like Later Start For American Idol

Fans took to social media to discuss the new release date for American Idol Season 23. Most comments were unhappy about waiting until March to start the new season.

Here is a sample of what fans think about the new season premiere date (via Good Housekeeping):

  • “Why so late!? That feels like forever away!”
  • “The season is starting late this year.”
  • “March is too far away.”

It also seems like the season won’t be very different when it comes to when it ends, though. In the two seasons where it started in March, it ended on May 21 and May 19. The last five seasons, when it premiered in February, ended between May 17 and May 23. The seasons had close to the same number of episodes as well.

Carrie Underwood, the most successful American Idol winner in history, will be the new judge. This is exciting for fans, as it gives a former contestant a chance to help the next winners succeed.

“Hopefully, when I listen to people come and audition, I can have any lens I need to put on in terms of what music I’m thinking,” Carrie said (via E! Online). “I think I can be honest and constructive, but still kind. And I think that’s the whole point, because people are coming in and it’s dreams. You’re part of somebody’s story from that moment on.”
