Actress and The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg recently claimed a New York City bakery refused to fill her order. However, the notoriety has actually proved to be in the bakery’s favor. Recent reports claim the business has actually sold out since the story came out.

Whoopi Goldberg First Shared The Story On The View

While appearing on The View, Goldberg recently shared a story involving an unnamed bakery. She claimed she was denied an order of “Charlotte Russe” desserts meant for her birthday.

Goldberg alluded to the bakery refusing the order over her own political views. Ultimately, she needed to send someone in her place to pick up the desserts.

During an episode that aired last Wednesday, Goldberg shared that, “My birthday dessert today was one of my mom’s favorites from when she was a kid.” As she noted, “She talked about these all the time, they’re called Charlotte Russe. It’s a sponge cake with whipped cream and a cherry on top.

“I should tell you, Charlotte Russe has no political leanings. The place that made these refused to make them for me.”

According to Goldberg, the bakery offered a different explanation as to why they allegedly couldn’t fill her order. She shared, “They said that their ovens had gone down, but folks went and got them anyway, which is why I’m not telling you who made them.”

Goldberg mused, “It’s not…because I’m a woman, but perhaps they did not like my politics.” She continued, “But, that’s okay, because you know what, listen, this is my mother’s celebration.”

“Pick these up and celebrate with me and my mom. Thank you everyone for celebrating my birthday today.”

The Story Ultimately Proved To Be Good For Business

While Goldberg didn’t directly name the bakery on the show, some viewers guessed it to be Staten Island’s Holtermann’s. This historical bakery is noted for being the area’s oldest family-owned bakery.

According to Entertainment Weekly, owner Jill Holtermann confirmed The View co-host indeed placed an order with the bakery. However, she denied any issues had anything to do with politics.

As Holtermann shared, the issue had to do with “trouble with our boilers.” She shared that this kept her from making a “commitment” to the order.

As noted by Breitbart, Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella held a press conference outside the bakery. This allowed Holtermann to shed more light on the situation. She shared how she learned about the story, “We didn’t know what was going on until somebody called us from Ohio…Y’know, there’s this thing with Whoopi Goldberg and the Charlotte Russe cups.”

However, the story turned out to be a blessing in disguise for the bakery, as it soon found itself selling out of goods. As Holtermann noted in a post on Instagram, “For the second day in a row, we’ve emptied out the shop, and it’s all thanks to YOU! Your love and loyalty keep us going!”

This was paired with images of empty shelves. The bakery would also later share a video of the Charlotte Russe cups.

Holtermann also thanked those who showed their support at the conference. As she shared, “I know how hard my family has worked to keep this business alive, and I wish my father was here today to see this — he would never believe it.”
