When people show up on Antiques Roadshow, they often want advice from the show’s experts. However, in something like antiques, even experts can be wrong. In a recent episode, that is exactly what happened when they estimated the cost of an heirloom, and they were way off.

Here is a look at what happened and how much the heirloom was sold for.

Antiques Roadshow Heirloom Comes From Hollywood Royalty

A guest showed up on Antiques Roadshow and had a jewel-encrusted cuff her great-great aunt passed down to her. That aunt was none other than legendary Hollywood actress Helen Hayes. This made it seem like it might be worth more than regular heirlooms.

Helen Hayes was an actress known as the “First Lady of American Theatre.” She worked from the silent era in 1905 and well into the years of Hollywood excess, with her last performance coming in 1987. She passed away in 1993 at the age of 92.

Hayes was the first person to win an Emmy, a Grammy, and a Tony Award in history. In 1986, she also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from then-President Ronald Reagan.

As for the heirloom, the woman said, “My mother gave it to me as a wedding present about 20 years ago. It had been a gift to my mother from her great aunt Helen Hayes.” There was also a gift card with it from “Aunt Helen.” The lady went on to say, ” I know almost nothing about it. I had a friend who sort of intimated that it was costume jewelry and stones for glass.”

She said someone then offered her $1,000 for it, but she said no. Now, she wants to know its true worth.

Antiques Roadshow: Ancient Heirloom Sells For Triple Its Estimated Value

“Our guest actually was in touch with us and told us that she found a photograph of Helen Hayes wearing the cuff,” expert Laura said (via The Express).

“This is a design that was quite famous in the 30s,” she continued. “Fulco Santo Stefano della Cerda, Duke of Verdura, was the designer who started working with Chanel in 1927 as a textile designer.”

They estimated the heirloom was worth between $100,000 and $150,000. That shocked the woman, who said she had no idea it was worth that much. Later, she got a bigger surprise. She put it up for sale at an auction house, and it ended up selling for $340,000.

While the heirloom’s owner was shocked, Laura wasn’t. “I wasn’t surprised at all. it’s the kind of piece that will probably come up once in a lifetime.”
