Martha Stewart’s Ex Reveals Marriage Was ‘Painful & Abusive’
After Martha Stewart dredged up her earlier marriage, her ex, Andy Stewart, it was hard for him to just stand by. She calls out “cheaters” with shocking information about her former husband. But now he is defending his point of view saying it was a “painful and abusive” marriage for him.

Recently, Martha Stewart called out her ex-husband, Andy Stewart in the Netflix docuseries about their past. When Netflix released Martha it raised many eyebrows. According to the synopsis, the docuseries was “Told in her own words.” Furthermore, it says, “This candid documentary charts the unstoppable rise, sudden fall, and hard-won comeback of lifestyle icon Martha Stewart.” But Martha criticized the editing of the series. One area in particular was the inclusion of her fling with someone during her marriage to Andy Stewart. While she was clear about her repugnance over her ex-husband cheating, she causally blew off her infidelity.
Martha Stewart was reportedly “badly wounded” by Andrew Stewart’s infidelity. In 2020, she said, “Getting divorced was a terrible thing for me because we were the first to divorce in my family.” Further adding, “And that we haven’t spoken since the divorce is even more painful. But I’m very strong, and I’m very motivated to get on with life.” But Andy and his current wife, Shyla Nelson Stewart, have come forward to give their side of the story.
Andy Stewart And His Wife Make A Statement
On Andy Stewart’s current wife’s Facebook page, the couple sets the record straight. They make a joint statement saying, “Hello FB family – this is my first and will be my only public comment on this subject. Since I am not active on any other social media platform, this is the only place I am sharing this.” Then, the post goes on to offer Martha Stewart’s ex, Andy some accolades after his depiction in the docuseries. Shyla Nelson Stewart says, “As some of you know, my husband is Andrew Stewart – brilliant publisher, avocational naturalist, and nature photographer, and one of the gentlest, most soft-spoken, kind-hearted men I’ve ever known.”
The post continues, “No one was more surprised than we when, after being introduced as colleagues almost 12 years ago, our connection blossomed into a deep and everlasting love. With our shared devotion to the Earth and to our families at the center, Andy and I have built a life of beauty, meaning, productivity, and purpose, infused with true love, which we share as fully as we can with our beautiful blended family of 5 amazing adult children, our 3 adorable grandchildren, our extended family, and many cherished friends.”

But as the statement continues, Martha Stewart is brought up. Undeniably, the portrayal of Andy and Martha’s marriage struck a chord with Andy and his current wife, Shyla. The couple continues their message to set the record straight. It says, “Prior to this happy chapter of his life, Andy had some dark ones, including a painful and abusive marriage to Martha (as in, Martha Stewart), which ended almost 40 years ago. While Andy quietly moved on and forward with his life, it appears that Martha continues to publicly relitigate the marriage, including comments in a sensationalized trailer for an upcoming documentary on Netflix.”
Martha Stewart Was Head Over Heels For Andy
While Martha Stewart’s documentary told the story of Andrew Stewart opening her up to travel and the love of luxurious food, it ended with disappointment after his alleged affair. Martha says Andy cheated on her with a woman who did the flower arrangements. She even arranged a place for her to stay on the property. In the documentary, Martha expressed, “I don’t know how many different girlfriends he had … but I think there were quite a few.” Admittedly, she felt like she prepared him a “snack” by offering the person a place to stay as it happened right under her nose.
After Andy left, he later married Shyla on a Vermont mountaintop in 2016. Shyla continues in the post, “The juxtaposition of Andy’s early life with the joy-filled, purpose-led, loving marriage we live today is striking. Every day, we openly express our gratitude for our love and for our life together. We both wish everyone, including Martha herself, the experience of loving and being loved deeply and fully, and the peace that comes from such a love. Shyla & Andy Stewart.” Reportedly, Andy and Martha haven’t communicated with each other in 20 years even though they share a daughter, Alexis Stewart.

Martha Stewart’s Ex-Sister-In-Law Gives Her Thoughts
During the docuseries, Martha Stewart explains one of the women she went to college with introduced her to her brother, Andy Stewart. Now, Andy’s sister, Diane Stewart Love, 83, confessed that Martha “hasn’t let go.” Diane’s introduction of Andy was more than six decades ago. Furthermore, Diane believes her brother “comes out like a prince in shining armor” in the docuseries. She says his portrayal shows he was “instrumental” in Martha’s beginnings of her career. Likewise, Diane says about Martha’s willingness to discuss her marriage, “Some people never forget.” She adds, “Some people move on, some don’t … Martha has always cared deeply for my brother. She just hasn’t let go of that.”
