Kitty Menendez Sister Defends Erik, Lyle Menendez After Murders
Joan VanderMolen’s sister, Kitty Menendez, is dead, killed by her sons, Erik and Lyle Menendez. The brothers remain in prison, serving their life sentences, but new evidence might see them get out one day. While many people seem shocked by this, Joan supports her nephews in this endeavor.

Kitty Menendez’s Sister Supports Kyle & Lyle Menendez
Erik and Lyle Menendez killed their parents, Jose and Kitty, in 1989. They claimed abuse, but the jury didn’t believe them and found both of them guilty, with a sentencing of life imprisonment with no chance of parole. Now, there has been new evidence that backs up the abuse claims, and attorneys are seeking a re-look at the sentencing.
Even though it was her sister who was killed, Joan VanderMolen, 92, said she supports Erik and Lyle. She even said that she believes the abuse claims after the brothers received a new hearing in the case (via Vanity Fair). “They didn’t deserve any of this,” VanderMolen said. “They were used and abused and there seems to be no end to it.”
Joan does feel bad about her sister’s death, but she says that Kitty should have left Jose before the murders. “The boys tried to get her to leave and they promised her they would take care of her and everything,” Joan said. Joan said their dad mistreated the two throughout their childhood.
“I’ll do what I can to help. I wanna get that straight because there’s nothing I wouldn’t do … nothing,” Joan said. “It’s just unreal that they’ve been in there 35 years. It’s unconscionable. The whole family feels this way.”
Erik And Lyle Menendez Getting New Trial Hearing
Erik and Lyle Menendez have gotten a new hearing. This will allow the court to hear the new evidence and decide if there should be a resentencing or possibly even a new trial.
Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón announced on October 4 that there will be a hearing to review the new evidence. This includes former Menudo singer Roy Rossello, who alleges he was drugged and raped as a teen by Jose Menendez.
The story has gotten a lot of attention lately thanks to a Ryan Murphy docuseries on Netflix and a real documentary in which Erik and Lyle tell their stories. The brothers have spoken out about the Netflix series Monsters, but it has helped raise awareness of their case again.
