Several years ago, professional dancer and current DWTS hostess Julianne Hough came out as “not straight.” However, she didn’t elaborate much at the time. Simply put, she knew she wasn’t exclusively interested in men.

But in a recent interview, she shed a little more light on her sexuality. Coming out can be an incredibly difficult journey, but the dancer shared that it also gave her a strong sense of self and vulnerability.

It’s been a long road of self-exploration and self-acceptance, but Julianne Hough is confident in who she is and feels excited to share her story with the world.

Julianne Hough Came Out During Her Marriage To Brooks Laich

Growing up in an LDS household in Utah, Julianne Hough likely didn’t feel free to explore herself as a teen and young adult. It was only after she was married that she realized that she didn’t identify as a heterosexual woman.

“We were married [at the time],” the 36-year-old shared on the Jamie Kern Lima podcast, discussing her previous marriage to hockey player Brooks Laich. “Coming out is one of the most vulnerable and empowering things that you can do. I think, for me, it’s not about being straight or gay or queer, it’s more about I’m learning what love is, and I love people.”

During their marriage, Julianne admitted she wasn’t quite sure who she was attracted to. At the end of the day, she felt herself more pulled toward a person’s heart rather than their gender identity. She married Brooks Laich because she loved him as a person.

“That is the freedom of the love that I was starting to experience in seeing people because I was able to take off a level of protection instead of being so internalized,” Julianne shared. “So, I was starting to see people and seeing their hearts and seeing their beauty and their essence. I was like, ‘Wow, I love people and I don’t know if it’s a sexual attraction or this attraction, but I’m just seeing people.’ That was, like, such a beautiful revelation.”

The DWTS Hostess Loved Discovering New Connections With People

Brooks Laich and Julianne Hough ended their marriage, but they still maintain an important role in each other’s lives. She also credited him with helping her accept herself and helping her feel comfortable in exploring her sexuality. She enjoyed connecting with other people and truly exploring what it meant to be vulnerable and uniquely herself.

“I had all these activations start happening,” the professional dancer shared. “I was starting to have these beautiful oneness experiences with people where I would be sitting there having a conversation and I’d be, like, thinking of a black-and-white dog and the number 12 would come up. I’d be like, ‘Did you have a dog that was black-and-white at 12?’ And they’d be like, ‘Wait, what? How did you know that?’”
