Jeopardy!’ Champ Reveals Winning Off People’s Bad Luck

Jeopardy! host Ken Jennings

Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions winner has come forward to talk about his experience on the game show. Yogesh Raut claims that his win was due, in part, to the bad luck of his fellow competitors. As the ToC re-airs on television, many viewers can see why he’d say that. Keep reading to see what the former champ had to say.

Former Jeopardy! ToC Winner Speaks About Luck

Jeopardy! is currently on hiatus and airing re-runs of previous episodes. Right now, they are running through last year’s Tournament of Champions. Yogesh Raut, who wound up taking home the $250,000 grand prize, said that much of his success on the game show was due to the “bad luck” of the other contestants.

Fans may remember that there was a series of upsets during the opening round of the ToC. It all came down to Yogesh, Ben Chan, and Troy Meyer.

The winner, Yogesh, recently spoke to The U.S. Sun about the experience. He admitted that skill did play a part in his victory. However, much of it came from other people’s misfortune.

“Like with any other kind of achievement, it feels good,” he told the publication. “I didn’t come in with any kind of expectation. I played many practice games. I knew it was a game based on both skill and luck.”

Then he added, “When I succeeded, it was a combination of skill and other people’s bad luck.” The Jeopardy! ToC winner said that the final game could have “gone so many different ways.”

Yogesh specifically pointed out a mistake Ben Chan made that ultimately led him to win the tournament. “If Ben had turned his head slightly during his last Daily Double and seen the category he was in, he would have almost certainly won the tournament,” he said.

ToC Players Watched The Games Unfold In Awe

Both Ben and Yogesh were one win away from the ToC title. Ben misread the category for the game’s Daily Double and it lost him the tournament.

Last year’s Tournament of Champions was one of the largest yet. It started out with 27 returning Jeopardy! champs. In the first few games, the players with the longest winning streaks went down quickly. Frontrunners like Cris Pannullo (21-day champ) and Ray Lalonde (13-day champ) were both picked off quickly.

Jeopardy! host Ken Jennings called it “the most dramatic first round in history.” Yogesh Raut talked about the mood on set during the ToC games. He revealed that all the contestants were asked to watch each game together in a green room. They were just as shocked as the folks at home about who won.

“We were taken aback by the same things that took people aback: Cris’ upset, Ray’s upset, Ike almost making the final,” he said. “It helped us remember it was a game and anything can happen.”

There’s no doubt that Yogesh’s Jeopardy! ToC win is evidence of that.
