Real Reason Sha’Carri Richardson Failed To Win Gold At Olympics
Sha’Carri Richardson came to the Paris Olympics and had high hopes for the gold medal. However, she lost out to Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia and went home with the silver medal. She was good enough to win, but she fell short when it came to the championship for one big reason.
Here is what happened to Sha’Carri Richardson when she lost to Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia.
Sha’Carri Richardson Loses After Slow Start At Paris Olympics
Sha’Carri Richardson prepared for her big shot at the 100-meter finals at the Paris Olympics. There was one problem that came with this. Richardson got off to a slow start in the run, and it cost her the gold medal. The real reason that she lost was because she took .221 seconds to get out of the blocks.
Even if Richardson had started faster like the other runners, she might have still lost the event. Julien Alfred ran an amazing race, and she could have won it regardless. Alfred won the gold medal by .15 seconds—the biggest margin in the event since 2008.
With that said, Richardson showed how great she was. While she took .221 seconds to get out of the blocks, she still passed every other runner in the competition and still took second place and a silver medal. While people claimed she was “overrated” because of the finish, her silver finish showed she is still a world-class athlete.
Fans flocked onto social media to discuss the race and how people shouldn’t have overlooked Julien Alfred:
- “I can’t image what it must be like to train your whole life, diet, sleep, exercise, weight lift and it all happens in 10 seconds.”
- “THE RACE WAS LOST IN THE BLOCKS!”
- “That is what the Olympics is all about. A dream come true.”
- “That was amazing and Julien Alfred ran the race of her life, and did it in the rain! Sha’Carri Richardson is amazing and truly grateful she represented our country.”
Sha’Carri Richardson Adds Another Medal To Team USA

My heart goes out to all the athletes that come short of their Olympic Dreams. But like Lyles said “I was ready to eat crow”, meaning when you talk the talk and fall short, don’t try to hide. If you loved the limelight when you’re on top, be bold to address the media in defeat. We all know they’re going to ask you THE DUMBEST QUESTIONS EVER… What happened, How do you feel, What went wrong?!?!
STANDARD RESPONSE: First thanks to my family and fans for supporting me. I had a bad start, and when you are running against truly the BEST in the world, there can be no mistakes. I congratulate the winner and am looking forward to cheering on Team USA while I rest for the 4×100 relay. I’m bummed I didn’t reach my goal of Gold, I’m glad to be here running against these great athletes and that I’m on the podium. Once I get with my coach and we review the race, I can discuss what happened later.
I think getting beat out of the blocks is only part of loosing the race.Being a former trackster to be a great 100 and 200 runner you gotta have good top end speed Usain was a living witness to this. There has been plenty of races where he didn’t get out of the blocks that good but made up for it on the top end so I think when Richardson I get back to work after the Olympics this is what she should work on.
