Captain Jonathan’s Time Bandit Encounters Dolphins

Plenty of Discovery Channel fans believe there is way too much scripting in recent seasons of the show. However, the rare dolphin sighting filmed for Deadliest Catch couldn’t be scripted. In fact, it seems fortunate that the camera crew could capture the scenes of thousands of dolphins porpoising through the waves.

F/V Time Bandit’s Captain Johnathan Hillstrand was down on his luck as he laid his crab pots in the Bering Sea. A dismal catch looked certain to make the trip a bust. As the Hillstrand family fished for a long time, they know that sometimes, there are just no crabs for a profitable venture. With literally just hours to go before a return to the harbor, the dolphins arrived and Jonathan called them a “miracle.”

When the crew spotted the dolphins, they’d just turned up almost no crabs 250 miles away from Dutch Harbor. When the dolphins showed up, the excitement was obvious and even Captain Jonathan smiled. So, he decided to follow them. Eventually, the echo sounder told the boss that they were near a deep canyon, and they dropped the traps.

Mind-Blown Viewers React

The exciting and charming footage of their dolphins caught the attention of fans of the Discovery Channel show. In the comments on YouTube, they expressed their thoughts:

  • I’ve been watching this since 2005. I’m such a fan except lately it seems rather scripted but I did see the episode with the dolphins and it was mine blowing. I’ve never seen dolphins that looked like baby orcas they had a white stripe on their side it was absolutely wild.
  • This video made me reevaluate my priorities. More laughter, more cats.
  • For some time now, dolphins have been cooperating with fishermen… it’s a beautiful spectacle, they hunt together.
  • My ol papi used to say “follow the dolphins.” Or at least he would’ve if he was a fisherman.
