Mark Harmon has a new gig these days. He is narrating the new NCIS: Origins, the spinoff sequel that he and his son Sean Harmon have created together. However, when he recently promoted the new series, he was asked whether or not he would return to NCIS. He is still an executive producer on this worldwide hit series.
According to TV Line, who reported from the TCA Summer 2024, this was a familiar question. “I get asked that a lot.” Then, he shared, “I’ve always let the writers do what they want to do.”
Later, he was asked to clarify. They asked the Freaky Friday star if he has been invited to reprise his role as Gibbs on the CBS military procedural. His answer was surprising. “Directly, like a phone call´´´? Not that I’m aware of.”
Therefore, the folks at The Mothership have not asked him to return. Nor have the writers created a scenario that required Gibbs to return to the team.
Next, he asked if he would return, should he be asked. He did not seem ready to commit. “I don’t know. It’s really about a feeling like you’re fulfilled with a role, or complete with a role.”

Now that Mark Harmon has shared that he has not been asked to return to CBS to reprise his role as Gibbs, nor was he fully opposed to returning, he was asked what he thought Leroy Jethro Gibbs would be doing now. His answer was intriguing.

NCIS Showrunner Shared What He Envisioned For Mark Harmon’s Return
Last season, NCIS celebrated its 1,000th episode. However, Mark Harmon was not part of this. Showrunner Steven D. Binder spoke about his absence. Michael Weatherly did a cameo for the David McCallum Ducky memorial. Everyone expected Gibbs to return.
However, Binder shared how they would use Harmon should he return to the series. Firstly, he made it clear that they wanted Mark to come back. “Of course, the door is always open. Then, he hinted that this would be a meatier role than a cameo, like Michael Weatherly’s. “When we bring him back, we’re not going to bring him back for two minutes.”
