MTV’s Video Music Awards took place last night at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. No one can dispute that it was a big celebration. It was well attended by tons of celebrities. During the nearly four-hour affair, there were performances, a guest appearance, awards, and the celebration of 50 years of hip-hop. However, Travis Barker wasn’t among the list of attendees. The Blink-182 drummer did not make it to the event on Tuesday night even though Blink-182 was nominated for best alternative music video for the band’s song “Edging.” But he had a good reason for skipping.

MTV’s Video Music Awards

No doubt, there were so many acts and attendees at this year’s MTV’s Video Music Awards. Among the action were Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion who did a live debut of “Bongos.” Also, Lil Wayne performed his new song “Kat Food” for the first time. Additionally, Olivia Rodrigo, Doja Cat, Demi Lovato, and Karol G took the stage, as did the K-pop groups Stray Kids and Tomorrow X Together.

For a second year, Anitta and Maneskin both returned to the VMAs. Shockingly, Taylor Swift and “Anti-Hero” stole the show this year, winning seven of the eight main awards for which she was nominated.  And, Midnight’s single won “Video of the Year.” The grand finale celebrated hip-hop’s 50th anniversary.  Although it was a stellar guest list, sadly, Travis Barker wasn’t there to see Blink-182’s nomination of “Edging” for best alternative music video.

Where Was Travis Barker?

Some fans speculated Travis Barker’s absence might have been due to additional complications with Kourtney Kardashian and the baby. However, his nonappearance had nothing to do with his pregnant wife Kourtney Kardashian, or the recent emergency surgery for the baby.  “Due to an urgent family matter, Travis has had to return home to the States,” a stated on the band’s Instagram Story on September 1.  And while that family emergency took Travis away from the tour, he is back to his regular schedule. “God is great. I flew home for a life-threatening emergency surgery for our baby that I’m so grateful went well,” he wrote on Twitter. “I want to say thank you for all the support. Tour resumes Friday.”

But in this case, Travis Barker, 47, was never set to attend the Video Music Awards. Instead, he missed his chance to get a Moon Person trophy in person because he is currently on the other side of the world.  On Tuesday, Barker shared an Instagram story of himself biking by the water in Denmark.  To which he captioned: “I ❤️Copenhagen.”  Additionally, He showed a video of himself performing on tour. While suspended from a platform, hanging above the stage, he performed above the Copenhagen crowd.

VMAs Outcome

And while Travis Barker and the band were preoccupied, the VMA win ultimately went to Lana Del Rey and Jon Batiste for “Candy Necklace.” The band has had seven nominations to date. However, Blink-182  has only taken home one Moon Person trophy. During the 2000 VMAs, they won the best group video for “All the Small Things.” And during that event, they also gave an epic performance of the hit song. Hopefully, they will be up for nominations again in the future.

What did you think about this year’s VMAs? Do you think Blink-182 will be back for next year’s event? Do you think returning on tour was a good idea for Travis Barker after Kourtney Kardashian’s emergency surgery? Drop some comments below.
