Suzanne Somers Turned Down Offer To Join ‘The View’
Former Three’s Company star Suzanne Somers said she once turned down the opportunity to join The View as a co-host. She said she had a chance to work with Barbara Walters on the daytime talk show. However, she said it didn’t interest her and she has never regretted the choice.
Here is what Somers had to say about the opportunity and why she turned it down.
Suzanne Somers turned down an offer to co-host The View
Suzanne Somers was on a recent episode of the Behind the Velvet Rope with David Yontef podcast and dropped some news on fans that no one knew before. The 76-year-old star said that she was asked to be one of the original co-hosts of The View when it started with Barbara Walters. However, she turned down the opportunity.
Barbara Walters started The View in 1997 and it consisted of five women talking about current events and news. Along with Walters, the original hosts included Meredith Vieira, Star Jones, Debbie Matenopoulos, and Joy Behar. Matenopoulos lasted one season while Jones and Vieira lasted until 2006. Walters left in 2014 and Behar is still on the show to this day.
However, Somers indicated she was asked to be one of the co-hosts, although it is unclear who replaced her when she declined the offer. For her part, Somers didn’t recall the former hosts outside of Walters. Yet, Somers did say that she never looked back and had a very good reason for turning down the offer from the show.
Why did Suzanne Somers turn down The View?
In 1997, Suzanne Somers was 51 and had already launched her own daytime talk show in 1994, named after her. That only lasted for one season. At the same time, she starred in the sitcom Step by Step with former Dallas star Patrick Duffy. Instead of joining The View, Somers took a role in the same year to co-host Candid Camera.
As for the reason she didn’t want to go on The View, Somers mentioned two things that convinced her to say no. First, the show takes place in New York City and she didn’t want to move to New York. Somers said she loves where she lives because of the weather and didn’t think New York City would work for her.
Somers also said that the format of the show did not interest her. “I don’t do well vying for time. And there, you gotta interrupt and butt in and butt out. It’s just not my personality,” she said. The big thing about shows like The View is for the hosts to fight to get their points across and that wasn’t something Somers found attractive.
