ESPN Reporter Fired After Cursing Out Reporter On Field
A long-time ESPN baseball reporter cursed out a fellow reporter on the field after a baseball game and the network fired her for it. This happened after a game on April 18 when Marly Rivera was waiting to interview New York Yankees’ star, Aaron Judge.
The news broke yesterday that ESPN fired Marly and here is what you need to know.
ESPN fires reporter for cursing at another journalist
After the New York Yankees played the Los Angeles Angels on April 18, ESPN reporter Marly Rivera, 49, was waiting to interview Yankees star Aaron Judge while he was signing autographs for kids. At that time, a second reporter, Ivón Gaete showed up to interview him as well.
The entire incident was recorded on video. Someone behind them filmed Judge signing autographs for the children. Marly told Gaete that she had scheduled dedicated time for her interview. It didn’t seem that the other reporter cared as she continued to push her way in. With Gaete ignoring Marly’s explanation, the ESPN reporter responded by calling her a “f***ing c**t.”
Gaete saw that this was being recorded and over-emoted to the camera, asking if they got that on the recording. When Marly returned, Gaete kept looking at the camera and giving huge wide-eyed expressions while Marly argued her case. Since the incident went live, Marly said she apologized to Gaete and “fully accepts responsibility for what I said, which I should not have” (via The New York Post). However, ESPN reported that they had fired Marly, and her bio was removed from the website.
Marly Rivera believes there is more to her firing than one incident
Marly Rivera revealed she felt her confrontation with Gaete, who is married to Major League Baseball’s vice president of communications, John Blundell, was only part of the reason ESPN fired her.
Marly said, “I am a professional with a sterling reputation across baseball and I do believe that I am being singled out by a group of individuals with whom I have a long history of professional disagreements.”
However, there is also a little more to the story than just Marly cursing out Gaete. The first thing ESPN likely saw was Marly using this aggressive language in front of small children. They simply wanted their favorite baseball player’s autograph. The entire video saw Aaron Judge doing his best not to even look at the two reporters.
At the same time, ESPN is in the middle of laying off several employees as Disney strategies budget cuts. On April 24, Sports Business Journal reported that ESPN planned to lay off around 7,000 employees. This might have been the wrong time to give the network a reason to fire someone.
