Suni Lee Isn’t Letting The Social Media Haters Win
Absolutely no one likes being trashed online. Suni Lee may be a powerful Olympic athlete, but she isn’t immune from the effects that mean comments have on her.
She opened up during the Janet Jackson Night episode and talked about how the internet trolls really hurt her self-esteem and mental health.
Many people forget that Suni Lee is only 18-years-old. She is a household name, but she’s also still finding her way as a young adult. Most of us can agree that negative comments aren’t helpful, but not everyone may realize how damaging those comments can really be to a young adult.
Suni Lee has been through a lot over the past few weeks
During the Queen Night episode, Suni Lee was battling some health issues. Right after her routine, she left the stage to get sick. Sasha Farber accepted their scores on her behalf.
“Last week was rough,” the young athlete said in the prerecorded package. “I literally ran off the stage on live TV. … When I was backstage, I was more embarrassed than anything but I was not about to throw up on national TV.”
She went on to confide in Sasha that the hateful comments on social media were really getting to her. The show flashed a series of mean tweets across the screen so fans could see what the Olympian is up against.
We previously reported that Suni Lee was apparently struggling with some blocks before Janet Jackson Night — and it appears the social media hate might have been part of it. However, Suni definitely managed to shake it all off before her performance Monday night.
She and Sasha performed a Samba to “All For You” by Janet Jackson and received their first perfect score from the judges. Everyone was really impressed with her performance — and her new, confident look too.
Suni and Sasha went on to go toe to toe with Jimmie Allen and Emma Slater for the dance-off. They easily bested their opponents and won a few bonus points.
Their Janet Jackson performances allowed them to stay out of the bottom three couples and easily advance to the semifinals, which will air next Monday.
Other Dancing With The Stars contestants deal with internet trolls too
It seems like every year, several Dancing With The Stars contestants deal with online bullies. Suni Lee may be dealing with her own critics right now, but she’s definitely not alone.
Val Chmerkovskiy even recently had his own battle with an Instagram troll who kept sending him harassing messages. He posted screenshots of the rude messages on his Instagram stories before snidely replying, “You sound like a big fan. Appreciate you.”
If you want to keep Suni Lee and Sasha Farber in the competition, don’t forget to vote. They’re counting on you to help them advance to the season finale in two weeks. Stay tuned for more!
