Cheryl Burke Doesn’t Want Her Children To Be Dancers — Find Out Why
Cheryl Burke has been with Dancing With The Stars for quite some time. In fact, she was the Season 2 champion! Few people know as much about the competitive world of ballroom dance as she does. And that’s exactly why she doesn’t want her future children to participate.
According to Cheryl Burke, ballroom dance competitions force young people to grow up before they’re ready
Cheryl has a podcast with her former DWTS partner, AJ McLean. It’s called “Pretty Messed Up” and they discuss all sorts of things on the show — including pressures young people face. The 37-year-old admits that the ballroom dance world can force people to grow up too quickly.
“I always say this – when I have a kid, if I have a girl especially, I won’t let her ballroom because look – there’s a lot of great things about ballroom, but there’s also the fact that you have to grow up so fast,” Cheryl said on the podcast.
If you’ve watched Dancing With The Stars over the years, then you’ve also seen how intimate some of the dance moves can be. It’s not always an appropriate situation for a young person. Unfortunately, it’s just part of ballroom dance competitions. Cheryl went on to discuss how growing up competing influenced her to start engaging in reckless activities.
She confessed she engaged in sexual relations before she was ready and thinks “that had a lot to do with the exposure that [she] was seeing and traveling alone without a chaperone.”
Cheryl Burke is also quite open about her battle with addiction over the years. If she truly feels this strongly about ballroom dance, it’s possible those experiences influenced her addiction too.
Is this the last year for the pro dancer?
As we said above, Cheryl Burke won Dancing With The Stars all the way back on Season 2. The show is now in its 30th season. Could this be her last year on the show?
“You know as a dancer, especially as a woman, our career, it doesn’t last very long. The fact that I’m 37 and still sambaing out there and shimmying is pretty unheard of,” she shared on the Tamron Hall show. “I’m not in the competitive level anymore, but still, I also have to understand that I have arthritis in my body, you know? The pounding and pounding and pounding, [I’m] technically leading our sports players or whoever we’re dancing with, right?”
She contracted COVID-19 at the start of Season 30 and admits it’s still having an impact on her health. Cheryl teased retirement in the past, but this year very well could be her last.
After she and Cody Rigsby leave DWTS, Cheryl might enjoy a quiet retirement with her husband, Matthew Lawrence. But if she and her husband choose to have children, don’t expect to see them on DWTS anytime soon.
Tune in next week to see how Cody and Cheryl perform during Horror Night!
