One Piece fans have been anxiously awaiting news about the live-action version of the anime. There is plenty to report when it comes to the live-action series. Keep reading to find out the release date and more.
What is One Piece?
Notably, One Piece has been around for a long time. It debuted on July 22, 1997. Now, there is plenty of source material for a live-action series. This is because there are 969 chapters with 95 volumes and counting.
The popularity of the manga is likened to Dragon Ball, Golgo 13, and Naruto. In the last 25 years, the manga has sold over 462 million copies. What’s On Netflix notes that One Piece is “one of the highest-grossing fictional franchises of all time.” This is because mangas, films, video games, and various merchandise combined, it is estimated that the franchise has generated over $21 billion in revenue.
For viewers unfamiliar with One Piece, the story takes place in an alternate version of Earth. It is crucial that filming for a live-action have room for ships because the anime takes place during the “Golden Age of Pirates.” All the pirates are trying to find a mythical treasure called “One Piece” that was left behind by legendary pirate, Gol D. Roger. A young boy, Monkey D. Luffy wants to have his own crew, find “One Piece” and become a Pirate King.
Release date information for One Piece live-action on Netflix
In January 2020, the live-action of the beloved anime series was announced. Then, in June 2020, multiple seasons came to Netflix. As of September 2021, the series is still listed in pre-production. Likely this is due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The original timeline had production beginning August 31, 2020, and wrapping up February 8, 2021.
Things appear to be in motion now. On September 3, 2021, Netflix tweets about the script for the first episode.

Showrunner Steven Maeda (The X Files, Lost, Lie to Me, & Helix) shares that he is in Cape Town, South Africa in early October. This is significant because WoN reports that it looks like Cape Town is where a majority of the filming will take place. This is likely because there is more than enough room for pirate ships. The outlet also reports that “according to someone familiar with the production, they have three pirate ships made for the show so far.”
As far as the release date goes, if everything goes according to plan, it doesn’t look like Netflix will see One Piece until sometime in 2022.
