Unexpected star Myrka Cantu wiped her Instagram account clean last month. Her first post upon her return hinted at why the break from Instagram was necessary.
There are many upsides to getting famous via reality television. The majority of celebrities – including reality stars – have social media accounts where they interact with fans. While that kind of connection can be uplifting and positive, it seems it can also get negative quickly.
Like everyone else, social media influencers need some time away from the platforms for their own mental health. Myrka Cantu amassed a lot of followers since her reality TV debut on Season 4 of TLC’s Unexpected. The show centers around teens who are unexpectedly pregnant at a young age.
Myrka Cantu Struggles With Portrayal on Unexpected
The young mom is open with her social media followers about the realities of reality TV. According to Myrka, it isn’t the best experience. During her popular Q&A chats with fans, she has revealed a lot of details about her negative experience with TLC.
In one response, she outright called the network “lowkey racist” for some questionable editing decisions. As it stands now, Myrka has no plans to return to the show for another season.
In addition to being vocal against the way TLC portrays her, Myrka is outspoken about her mental health struggles. She often shares with her followers information about postpartum depression.
In a recent Q&A, the Unexpected star reveals that her mental health is “getting better” after her social media break.
What prompted her to abruptly wipe her Instagram clean of ALL photos, including of boyfriend Ethan Ybarra and their daughter?
Why Did Myrka Cantu Take Social Media Break?
Fans often ask her if she is still together with her baby daddy, Ethan. She happily reassures them that yes, they are still together. So, her social media break had to do with their relationship.
For Myrka Cantu, the negatives of social media often outweigh the positives. She is one of the more active Instagram users. She often hosts Q&A sessions with her fans. While many of her followers ask questions being a teen mom, other followers send her rude messages.
Before she got pregnant, Myrka was a high school cheerleader with a body to die for. However, her postpartum body is something fans often feel the need to comment on. And it bothers Myrka. In a long post to her Instagram, she told fans off for body-shaming her.
Commenters have gone so far as to accuse her of “promoting obesity.” In her post, she denies that, but says losing the baby weight isn’t easy.
Myrka Cantu encourages her followers to “be better” and stop leaving nasty comments or sending rude messages.
She also shared a full-body photo on her Instagram Stories and let her followers know that she is working with a personal trainer.

Even before Myrka wiped her Instagram clean, photos of her daughter, Attalie, were a rare commodity. Those photos were mainly reserved for her Instagram Stories, which self-delete after so many hours.
However, upon her return to Instagram, Myrka Cantu dumped a series of adorable photos of her daughter.
