Whoopi Goldberg has moderated The View since 2007. Joy Behar, who is the only host left from the original 1997 cast, has been on the show the longest. However, she took a step back for two seasons. Whoopi Goldberg currently holds the record for most consecutive seasons of the daytime talk show. Viewers assume that kind of longevity has to come with a big payday. The Ghost actress made rare comments about her shocking salary on the daytime talk show. Keep reading for all the details.

Whoopi Goldberg Reveals Why She Joined The View

Whoopi Goldberg won an Oscar for her role in the 1990 hit movie Ghost, which also starred Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. The comedian went on to star in more blockbusters but the roles dried up in the 2000s. The View was going through some drama in 2006 when Rosie O’Donnell abruptly left following an on-air spat with Elisabeth Hasselbeck.

Barbara Walters, who was the show’s creator, executive producer, and co-host at the time, gave Whoopi Goldberg a call. “Barbara offered me a job. She said, ‘We just lost one of the people on the show, would you consider coming over?'”

Whoopi Goldberg immediately accepted the job because she “needed work” and has been “crazy-glued to that chair” ever since, despite retirement talks. The actress revealed all of this on the Baby, This is Keke Palmer podcast.

She Makes Rare Comments About Shocking Salary

Keke Palmer asked Whoopi Goldberg her favorite part of hosting The View. Some viewers have said for a while that the comedian is checked out and only showing up for a paycheck. Coincidentally, the money is what brings Whoopi Goldberg to set every day. “The check. I love the check,” she told Keke Palmer.

Keke replied that she could “only imagine” how much ABC pays Whoopi Goldberg for The View. You would be shocked. Listen, you would be shocked. … As soon as they’d show you that check, you’d be like, ‘What the…?'” Whoopi responded.

However, she was grateful for the job. “I look around every day before I leave my house and I see my family and I see pictures of folks and I think, ‘Oh, yeah, it’s good to have a job.’ And I come to work… A lot of people don’t have jobs right now, so I’m lucky,” she said. But how lucky?

So, How Much Is Her Paycheck?

Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Alyssa Farah Griffin, Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin, and Ana Navarro are all expected to return this fall for The View‘s 30th season. The network is reportedly demanding pay cuts to keep costs down amid a feud with the FCC.

Even with a pay cut, Whoopi Goldberg is reportedly easily making seven figures. The Sun reported in 2022 that her salary was $8 million per season. That’s more than OG host Joy Behar, who reportedly makes $7 million.

The View returns in September 2026.
