Modest Mouse Guitarist Simon O’Connor’s Alleged Messages To Underage Fan Leaked
Modest Mouse guitarist Simon O’Connor recently became the subject of a post on social media, alleging he sent a number of inappropriate messages with a fan. Since then, O’Connor himself shared a response on social media. In addition, the band itself also recently shared an update concerning O’Connor.
Simon O’Connor Joined Modest Mouse In The 2020s As A Guitarist & Backing Vocalist
Modest Mouse is an American indie band that formed in the 1990s. They initially found mainstream success in the early 2000s with the singles “Float On” and “Ocean Breathes Salty.”
Simon O’Connor, also known by the alias “Simon Doom,” joined Modest Mouse in 2021, serving as a guitarist and backing vocalist for the band. However, O’Connor recently came under fire after comments sent to an underage fan came to light.

In a post on Reddit, an anonymous person shared direct messages on Instagram O’Connor allegedly sent her after she liked a few of his posts. This took place a few days before her 17th birthday.
In the first message, the musician shared an image of people playing Simon Says that read, “SIMON calls your bluff BUZZ.” The fan appeared to “like” the message with an alien head emoji. O’Connor then allegedly shared a photo of a nude African-American man who was sitting with his legs open.
O’Connor apologized for this, but the fan said it was “all good,” having believed that his account was hacked. However, he denied that this was the case. He allegedly wrote, “Wish I was hacked just had a party night and looking at everything with one eye ya know.”
The fan then told the musician to get a good night’s sleep. He replied with a saluting face emoji and allegedly wrote, “But you did blindside me with a gaggle of likes and then very little intro besides bikini pics so we are both to blame.” He then unsent the message, apparently writing, “I did it again.”
O’Connor Himself Appeared To Respond To The Messages In Another Post
The fan then claimed that she attempted to reach out to people in the fandom and no one in the fandom cared. Following this, O’Connor responded to this with a post of her own.
The musician wrote, “Firstly, I would like to just state that I unequivocally oppose any sexual behavior towards minors. As a human and a parent, it disgusts me.” He claimed that he was receiving messages from someone who repeatedly deleted their accounts and assumed the fan was the same person.

The Band Shared An Update Concerning O’Connor This Past Friday
O’Connor shared, “I assumed that this was the same person I had dealt with before and, with poor judgement, I decided to reach out with a tasteless meme, a sticker that read ‘Simon calls your bluff,’ and an attempt to indicate that I recognized the ‘barrage of likes’ and similar photo content from the previous profiles…. Almost a ‘gotcha.’”
O’Connor continued, “I’m genuinely sorry to the person who received those messages. They didn’t deserve to be put in that position, and I’m sorry for the stress and attention this has brought them. I know some people will choose not to believe me, and I understand that. I can’t change what’s happened. All I can do is tell the truth, take responsibility for my mistake, and apologize.”

On Friday, Modest Mouse announced that O’Connor would not be joining the band on the upcoming tour, which kicks off on August 4 in Ojai, California. In a post on Instagram, they noted, “The good news is that Seth Jabour of Les Savy Fav will be jumping in to play guitar. We look forward to being out there with you all.”
