‘Today’ Jenna Bush Hager Shares Emotional Reaction To Dad’s Presidential Run

Jenna Bush Hager is a prominent journalist and broadcast journalist on Today. However, many first knew her as the daughter of a U.S. president, George H. W. Bush. Recently, she opened up about what it was like during her father’s presidency, even revealing her emotional reaction to learning that her father was running.

Jenna Bush Hager Looked Back At The Start Of Her Father’s Presidency During A Recent Podcast Appearance

Jenna and her fraternal twin sister, Barbara, are the daughters of the 43rd U.S. president, George W. Bush. They are also the granddaughters of the 41st U.S. president, George H. W. Bush.

Following her father’s presidency, Jenna pursued a career in journalism. Joining Today as a correspondent in 2009, she later became a co-host on the show’s fourth hour in 2019.

Recently, during an episode of the Las Culturistas podcast, Jenna admitted that she wasn’t always happy about her father’s choice of career. While noting that she and her twin “didn’t choose” a life in the public eye, Jenna shared that they were initially against their father becoming president.

Speaking with Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers, Jenna shared, “When our dad told us he was going to run for president, we broke into tears. We said, ‘You’re going to ruin our lives,’ which we’ve apologized about.”

Jenna Also Talked About How She & Her Sister Helped Another Pair Of First Kids

Jenna explained, “We told him he was going to lose. We were like, ‘Fine, you’re gonna lose! You can run, but you’re gonna lose!’ I think what it goes to say is we had parents that wanted us to have a normal life. When Barbara and I walk on the street in New York, people are like, ‘We love y’all. Y’all are so normal.’ And that, I think, is a compliment.’”

During the conversation, Yang talked about how Jenna and her sister grew up in the spotlight and asked if that influenced her in how she raises her own kids. For her part, Jenna noted that there was a lot of pressure placed on kids, especially teenagers, these days. She continued, “I’m like, ‘I want happy kids who are kind. That’s all.’ And I think my parents — there was no rule book.”

Jenna noted that things could have been worse for her, looking back, although she did take note of her college years, especially being a feature in the press. However, one good thing she felt came from a life in the public eye was that she has “the thickest skin ever now.”

Jenna also recounted how she and her sister used their experiences to help former President Barack Obama‘s two daughters, Malia and Sasha, when their father became president. She noted that she and her twin wrote a letter to The Wall Street Journal calling on people to leave them alone. However, she also noted that they were spared some criticism due to being younger.
