Savannah Guthrie’s ‘Today Show’ Return Date Has Special Meaning
Nearly two months after her mother went missing, Savannah Guthrie is ready to return to work. She hasn’t been on the Today Show since February. Her co-host, Al Roker, revealed the special meaning behind her return date. Keep reading for the latest on the ongoing story that captivated the nation.
Savannah Guthrie Sets Today Show Return
Savannah Guthrie was missing from the Today Show for most of December as she had to take time off after vocal cord surgery. She made a triumphant return in January, but a family crisis made her leave again. Her mother, Nancy Guthrie, disappeared from her home in Tucson, Arizona, on January 31.

The police and FBI have been investigating the alleged abduction for nearly two months, but have very few leads. They don’t know where Nancy Guthrie is or if they will ever find her. Hoda Kotb stepped in to fill the void on the Today Show. But now her time is coming to an end.
Savannah Guthrie sat with Hoda Kotb for a lengthy interview. The Today Show broke it up into three parts. Savannah Guthrie announced during the third segment that she is finally ready to return to the NBC morning program.
Viewers can expect her back in the anchor chair on Monday, April 6. “I think it’s part of my purpose right now, I want to smile, and when I do, it will be real, and my job will be my protest,” she said about her decision to return.
Al Roker Reveals Special Meaning Of Date
Savannah Guthrie has been a familiar face to Today Show viewers for over a decade. Her co-hosts supported her during her mother’s disappearance. Hoda Kotb returned to the show despite leaving in January 2025 to spend more time with her children.

Savannah Guthrie’s co-workers celebrated the news of her return. Al Roker pointed out the special meaning behind the date of April 6. “What’s wonderful, it’s almost symbolic after Easter and the resurrection, the rising, I think as a family we’ll hold hands and help her,” he said.
Craig Melvin said he hadn’t thought of the significance of the date. However, Jenna Bush Hager said that Savannah Guthrie likely had and chose that date for a reason.
Savannah Guthrie said during the interview with Hoda Kotb that her children played a huge part in her decision to return to the Today Show:
“I will do it for my kids. I will. I will not fall apart. I will not let whoever did this take my children’s mother from them.”
Savannah Guthrie warned viewers that she might be different when she returns to the show after her mother’s disappearance. However, she’ll have the support of her co-anchors.
