Many couples splurge for fancy restaurants to celebrate the year’s most romantic holiday. McDonald’s is probably the last place you’d take your significant other on Valentine’s Day. But the fast food giant is offering free caviar. Keep reading for all the details on the unexpected promotion.

McDonald’s Offering Free Caviar For Romantic Holiday

Caviar is a food delicacy. The unfertilized fish eggs can cost upwards of thousands of dollars. Fast food franchise McDonald’s is offering it for free for a Valentine’s Day promotion. The chain that’s known for its burgers unveiled plans for a caviar and chicken nuggets promotion.

According to the U.S. Sun, the caviar and chicken nuggets combination went viral based on the New York City Korean fried chicken restaurant COQODAQ. The restaurant, which opened in 2024, has a menu item called the Golden Nugget, a sole crispy chicken nugget topped with caviar. Rihanna was among the celebrities who tried the unexpectedly delicious pairing. Kits of six nuggets and caviar were sold for $100 at the U.S. Open in August.

McDonald’s got in on the viral trend for a special Valentine’s Day promotion. The quick-stop restaurant partnered with Paramount Caviar for the free giveaway. The free McNuggets Caviar kits includes a 1-ounce tin of McNugget Caviar, a $25 McDonald’s gift card, creme fraiche and a Mother of Pearl caviar spoon.

“After all, nothing says ‘ILY’ quite like a limited drop from McDonald’s just in time for your Valentine’s Day plans.” McDonald’s said in a statement about the release.

The kits aren’t sold in stores. The online-only promotion went live at 11 a.m. Eastern on Tuesday, February 10, and sold out within minutes.

Where To Get Sold-Out Caviar & Nuggets Kits

The free McDonald’s caviar and nuggets kits sold out shortly after the site crashed after its launch on Tuesday. There was only a limited number of kits available and they were scooped up quickly.  A pop-up message encouraged disappointed social media users to try pairing their new Hot Honey sauce with McNuggets instead.

However, there’s still a chance to get the kits… for a price. The free kits from McDonald’s were posted on resale sites like eBay within minutes of the site selling out. Disappointed foodies took to social media to blast the promo as a “scam.”

  • “Marketing Ploy to built hype to cash in on holidays with cheap garbage.”
  • “Sold out before it launched what a scam”
  • “Saw that someone sold one for $400 on eBay already… such a joke.”
  • “Site crashed and now says sold out! They definitely duped everyone and gave these kits to influences and staged this “giveaway”
  • “Unacceptable”
  • “I saw a lot of influencers who got the kits days ago. I wouldn’t be surprised if it came out that almost all the kits were given to influencers.”
  • “The whole thing was a lie from the beginning. I’m sure they’ll send out a small handful to influencers to be like see guys we totally weren’t lying.”
  • “It already seemed like a prank, just a way to get people to talk about McDonalds so they’ll think of going there. What a joke. Just makes me want to avoid the place for wasting my time.”
