More recently, Johnson competed at the 2026 Winter Olympics, where she earned the USA’s second gold medal in women’s downhill on Sunday. Reportedly, she beat out Germany’s Emma Aicher by just four hundredths of a second.

This medal was also the first won by the United States for the 2026 games. However, she recently shared some bad news after she left the medal stand.

While celebrating, the ribbon attached to the medal broke off. This caused the medal to fall and break into three pieces.

As shared by The Athletic, Johnson recently spoke about the incident with reporters. She shared, “Well, I was jumping up and down in excitement, and it fell off. I think that’s maybe why it broke.”

Having a sense of humor about the situation, Johnson expressed hope that her medal would soon be fixed. As the outlet noted, she continued, “I don’t know that the Italians are known for their engineering. I assume someone will fix it.”

Fans, & Even Other Olympians, Have Also Been Sharing Their Reactions To The Story

During Johnson’s news conference, she also showed her broken medal, calling it a “show-and-tell moment.” She added, “It is heavy, it’s broken. It’s a look.”

However, Johnson could have a chance at another gold medal. This could happen if things go well for her in the women’s combined team competition.
