‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Inspires Woman To Carry Baby Full-Term To Donate Organs
A woman in Florida recently faced a tragedy within her family. However, she decided to make a sacrifice to help others in need. The woman reportedly had an interesting inspiration: the long-running drama series, Grey’s Anatomy.
One Florida Woman Found Inspiration From Grey’s Anatomy During A Tragic Situation
Grey’s Anatomy is a medical drama set at the fictional Seattle Grace Hospital, later Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. The show premiered back in 2005 on ABC.
The series has proven to be a long-running show, serving as ABC’s longest-running current scripted primetime show. It also inspired two spin-offs, Private Practice and Station 19.

However, the series has also proven to be an inspiration for many in real life. There have even been reports over the years of people being able to save lives due to medical information they learned from the show. In one recent story, the series was also attributed to inspiring one woman to help others amid a personal tragedy.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, a woman, Catherine Mornhineway, and her partner, Andrew Ford, learned that their unborn baby had a condition known as anencephaly. The condition meant that the baby’s brain would never fully develop and the baby wouldn’t survive after birth.
Doctors told the couple that most parents opt to terminate the pregnancy. However, Catherine told the outlet that she didn’t know how to move forward.
However, Catherine shared that she came across a clip of the ABC medical drama. On the show, she saw a woman in the same situation. It soon inspired the couple to carry the baby to term.
Speaking with Fox 13 Tampa Bay, Catherine shared, “I came across a Grey’s Anatomy clip about a character on the show that had a baby with this condition. And she went along with the pregnancy and donated organs [to other babies], and I thought that was … it really touched me.”
Catherine & Andrew Also Touched On The Few Days They Got To Spend With Their Daughter, Haven
The couple hoped that their baby, a girl they named Haven, could help save the lives of other babies. Catherine, who is already a mother of three, delivered Haven on December 11 at Florida Brandon Hospital. Haven survived for four days in the NICU.
Catherine and Andrew shared that they tried to share what little time they had as a family. Andrew shared, “With the little bit of time that we got with her, we just wouldn’t trade any of it.”

Catherine also shared that they took Haven outside to the hospital’s bereavement garden with hospital approval so she could “feel the sun.”
Andrew noted, “Back in the [hospital room], she passed on my chest, and, you know, we were all just kind of snuggled into bed, and I just couldn’t think of a more beautiful way to say goodbye. Our miracle becomes someone else’s miracle as well.”
The couple then donated Haven’s organs through the LifeLink Foundation, which is dedicated to saving lives through organ and tissue donations.
LifeLink’s public affairs manager, Sherri Day, shared, “We don’t often hear stories of women carrying babies to term with the sole intent of donating that baby’s organs to someone else who needs a lifesaving transplant. What a remarkable family.”
There have been other times that the series has inspired viewers to help others and even save lives. Back in late 2011, a Wisconsin woman reportedly survived an asthma attack thanks to her daughter and a friend. According to The Hollywood Reporter, they learned how to perform CPR by watching Grey’s Anatomy.
