‘Survivor’ Joe Hunter Says Sister’s Death Was Not Suicide, On ’48 Hours’
Joe Hunter of Survivor fame tragically lost his sister, Joanna Hunter, in a story shrouded in mystery. Since then, a law has been signed in her honor. In addition, her story has also become the focus of a documentary series.
Joe Hunter Shared That His Sister Was A Big Inspiration For Him To Join Survivor
Hunter is originally a fire captain from West Sacramento, California. He became known to reality show fans after appearing on Survivor 48.
During his time on the show, Hunter made headlines for his support for fellow castaway Eva Erickson. After she opened up about her autism to him, he even made sure to support and comfort her after being placed on an opposing team. He ultimately ended up the season’s second runner-up.

On the CBS show, Joe also opened up about the death of his sister, Joanna, noting that she was the inspiration for him joining the show. While speaking with Parade, Joe shared, “Survivor, for me, really came about from my sister.”
Joe continued, “Unfortunately, I lost my sister to domestic violence a couple of years ago, and she really was the driving force in this. She watched from the first season of Survivor. And she actually wanted us to both try out for this.”
Joe admitted that his sister seemed to have more faith that they could do it than he did. He shared, “And to be honest, I didn’t think we could. And I kind of just brushed it off and said there’s no way we could.”
Tragically, however, Joanna was found dead on October 6, 2011. Initially, her death was ruled as a suicide. However, Joe and his family did not believe this narrative.
Suspicion fell on Joanna’s husband, former pastor Mark Lewis, who placed the 9-1-1 call about her death. Lewis was never tried or convicted in connection to her death, with it being ruled a suicide. However, as the outlet shared, he was sentenced to eight years in prison after hiring three people to throw a Molotov cocktail in front of an ex-girlfriend’s house.
Joe Hunter & His Family Worked To Develop A Law On His Sister’s Behalf
Joanna’s story later inspired a law in California. In a release on social media, 48 Hours shared, “Joe Hunter’s sister, Joanna, who had experienced domestic violence, died at 36. Her case was ruled a suicide. Her family says it was murder. They remain critical of the way law enforcement handled Joanna’s case.”
“Now, thanks in part to the Hunter family’s efforts, there is new legislation in California. SB 989 provides law enforcement with a checklist to help identify when there has been a history of domestic violence. It is known as Joanna’s Law.”
Reportedly, Joe Hunter and his family worked with California state senator Angelique Ashby to develop Bill 989. Governor Gavin Newsom signed “Joanna’s Law” back on September 27, 2024. It was enacted at the start of 2025.
Joanna Hunter Was Also The Subject Of A Recent 48 Hours Episode
In a statement, Newsom shared, “I am proud to sign these laws to help victims escape their abusers and provide them with financial tools and security to rebuild their lives. Today, we are putting into place new resources to support survivors and secure justice to hold abusers accountable.”
Joanna Hunter’s story was also the focus of an episode of the documentary series, 48 Hours. The episode, titled “Joe Hunter’s Mission,” aired on Saturday, December 13.
