A merger between Paramount Global and Skydance Media resulted in major changes at CBS, especially the news division. Rumors began in October that Gayle King is leaving CBS Mornings when her contract expires. The news anchor confirmed rumors of ‘changes’ at CBS and addressed the anchor shakeups.

Gayle King Addresses CBS Mornings Rumors

Bari Weiss took over as the editor-in-chief of CBS News after the merger went through in August. The first order of business was massive cost-cutting layoffs and shuttering certain areas that no longer aligned with the network’s vision. Variety reported in late October that CBS was revamping the morning news program with new anchors.

Gayle King, Tony Dokoupil, and Nate Burleson currently anchor CBS Mornings but not for long. Sources told Variety that CBS was looking to dump Gayle King when her contract is up in May 2026. When approached by TMZ outside the network’s New York City studio, Gayle King said it was the first she’d heard of it.

She was recently a guest on Sherri, where she was asked again about the rumors. Gayle King kept her cards close to the vest and reiterated her previous remarks. “I saw those rumors. What I say is this: ‘I’m not going to negotiate in the press,’” she told Sherri Shepherd.

Gayle King added, “I hear one thing in the building and one thing outside of the building. I’ll be reading one thing, and I’m like, ‘that’s not true.”” However, she gave a hint that things behind-the-scenes at CBS aren’t great.

She Confirms ‘Changes’ At Network

CBS Evening News has lost both of its anchors in the last two months. John Dickerson announced his departure in October, followed by Maurice DuBois in December. The network was reportedly left scrambling to sign a deal with the anchor they had their eye on to take over. It was announced earlier this week that CBS Mornings anchor Tony Dokoupil will be the sole evening news anchor starting in early January.

His promotion gives weight to the rumors that Gayle King is out. But Oprah’s bestie isn’t getting involved in the rumors.  “I’ve decided I’m going to stay out of the drama — and there is some drama,” she said on Sherri.

However, she did confirm that changes are coming to the morning program. “Tony’s promotion is certainly going to mean changes at CBS Mornings. There’s no question about that, so we shall see,” she said. Despite what it means for her future, Gayle King said she’s “very happy” for her co-anchor.

While Gayle King may be out at CBS Mornings, the network is reportedly interested in keeping her around. It sounded like she would be more than happy to stay. I like the job and I’m told they liked me,” she told Sherri Shepherd.

Gayle King’s future with the network remains in limbo. But stay tuned for an announcement any day now.
