The co-founder of the band, Raul Malo, revealed in 2024 that he was battling cancer. He tried to assure fans that the cancer he had was “very common.” He moved to Houston, Texas, during his cancer battle for treatment.

Sadly, he succumbed to the battle with colon cancer on December 8, 2025. The band announced the heartbreaking death on social media the next day.

Trisha Yearwood was among the country musicians who reacted to Raul Malo’s death. She had a special connection with The Mavericks. Her ex-husband, Robert Reynolds, was the bassist in the band for years.

During her marriage to Robert Reynolds, Trisha Yearwood collaborated with The Mavericks on “Somethin’ Stupid” for the band’s 1995 album Music For All Occasions. Trisha Yearwood and Robert Reynolds divorced in 1999. She went on to marry Garth Brooks in 2005.

The “I’m In Love With The Boy” singer took to social media to share her respects after Raul Malo’s death. “I don’t have words to express my sadness at the passing of Raul Malo, one of the finest voices of our generation, with a larger than life personality to go with it,” she wrote.

Her tribute continued, “I’ve been sitting with my memories this morning, and just want to send my love and strength to Betty and the Malo family, to The Mavericks, and to everyone who loved Raul and his music. Gone too soon.”

The country music industry suffered a huge loss with the passing of The Mavericks’ singer. Trisha Yearwood was one of many performers, including Dwight Yoakam and Chris Isaak, to pay tribute to the “voice of a generation.”
