‘CBS Mornings’ Co-Anchor In Talks To Take Over ‘CBS Evening News’
A massive shakeup at CBS has left the Evening News program without an anchor. The network reportedly had to scramble to sign a replacement after two popular anchors quit the shows weeks apart. Keep reading to find out which CBS Mornings co-anchor is in talks to take over the nightly news.
CBS Evening News Anchor Went ‘Rogue,’ Quit After Merger
Since January 2025, John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois have co-anchored the CBS Evening News. But they both announced weeks apart that they are leaving the news program and CBS altogether. John Dickerson made the unexpected announcement in October that he was leaving by the end of the year. He didn’t say why, but viewers think he was let go after previously speaking out against the Paramount Global merger with Skydance Media.

Paramount Global owns CBS. The company merged with Skydance Media in August, forming Paramount Skydance. The new company immediately set its sights on overhauling the CBS news division. A few months before the merger went through, CBS announced that it was canceling Stephen Colbert’s late-night talk show.
Maurice DuBois’ future at the news desk was thrown into question after his co-anchor’s announcement. The CBS Evening News anchor made an announcement of his own this week. He revealed that he’s also done at CBS News, effective December 18. John Dickerson didn’t reveal his last air date, but sources told the NY Post that he’s done on December 19, leaving the program without an anchor.
The source claimed that Maurice DuBois went “rogue” and announced his exit before CBS had a replacement locked in. The network was reportedly planning to announce the CBS Evening News anchor’s departure and his replacement at the same time.

CBS Mornings Co-Anchor In Talks To Take Over
There has been a lot of speculation about what’s going on at CBS News. News broke in October that CBS wasn’t planning to renew Gayle King’s contract for CBS Mornings when it expires in May 2026. She currently co-hosts the morning program alongside Tony Dokoupil and Nate Burleson.
The network is reportedly eyeing one of them to take over for the CBS Evening News. Tony Dokoupil is allegedly in talks to take over as the sole host of the nightly news program. However, he hasn’t officially signed on the dotted line.
The NY Post’s source revealed that the new editor in chief of CBS News, Bari Weiss, considered other big names to take over. Fox News’ Bret Baier and Dana Perino, CNN’s Anderson Cooper and ABC News correspondent Matt Gutman were reportedly all under consideration to replace John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois. Earlier reports suggested Norah O’Donnell was the network’s first choice.

Who Do Viewers Want?
Choosing Tony Dokoupil may not be the right move. Viewers of the morning show took to social media a few months ago to slam the co-anchor.
- “Tony needs to head on over to FOX. Those are obviously his people. He’s bad at hiding this obvious fact about himself.”
- “he went in hard defending Paramount’s “Financial” reasoning for cutting The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Someone’s trying to kiss up to his bosses and get a promotion.”
- “I was shocked that Tony didn’t get canned for his abhorrent behavior with Ta-Nehisi Coates. A slap on the hand was not enough.”
- “Gayle is the only reason I have suffered through Tony this long. He’s such an ignoramus.”
The source told the NY Post that Gayle King may not be out at CBS Mornings if the network can negotiate a cheaper contract. “It’s a game of chess. It all depends on where the chips fall,” the source said.

Norah O’Donnell was the best on evening news.. my second choice would be John Dickerson.
I LOVE Gayle and Nate; Tony I can take or leave. The evening news team never had a single spark of charisma. I’m sure they are both really nice men, but as a news team, they are a zero. Bring Nora back!!
