USPS Issues Urgent Warning As It Plans Shutdown
The United States Postal Service (USPS)has just issued an urgent warning to all patrons as it plans an upcoming shutdown. So, what is this for, and just how long will it go on for? Keep reading for all of the vital details.
USPS Issues Urgent Shutdown Warning
Shutdowns are never a good thing, and it has been a notable term over the last few months. Unfortunately, the United States Postal Service is about to undergo one, and it could be quite problematic. Over the holiday season, patrons rely heavily on the post office for a variety of things. They send packages, letters, cards, and photos to family and friends, and November and December are peak times, delivering over 12 billion pieces of mail. Additionally, the carriers will deliver roughly 600 to 800 million packages, ending on the first of the year. Their jobs never stop, but that is all about to change in the blink of an eye.

Per the USPS, they will cease operations for a full day, but when will that happen and why? On Christmas Day, there will be no mail whatsoever. That is just one month after carriers did not make any deliveries for the Thanksgiving holiday, as well. Now, this is not completely unexpected, as there are almost a dozen holidays when the post office will not deliver mail. They include:
- New Year’s Day
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day
- Presidents’ Day
- Memorial Day
- Juneteenth
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Columbus Day
- Veterans Day
- Thanksgiving
Most businesses will be shut down for the holiday, but not everyone celebrates Christmas. Therefore, not everyone may automatically think that there would be no deliveries. Or it may slip the minds of those who are extremely busy, which also makes sense.

The United States Postal Service wants to remind everyone to get their parcels and letters out in an expeditious manner:
“The Postal Service wants to make sure that you send all of your holiday mail in time for your family and friends to receive and enjoy for the holidays. Therefore, in order to ensure timely delivery of your cards, letters or packages, please note the shipping deadline dates.”
Another Shutdown
It has also been reiterated that there will be no deliveries the following week on New Year’s Day. So, again, all packages, letters, cards, and gifts should be sent out well in advance. Things will also take longer to travel due to weather conditions, so that must be a consideration when making postal visits. Now, one may be thinking that this should be common sense. Of course, the USPS will be closed on major holidays, but as aforementioned, this can be a hectic time of the year. That is why the post office is encouraging everyone to take note and plan ahead.
Finally, do not forget these key deadlines, per the Washington, DC headquarters, when sending out vital mail:
- December 9th: Military Mail (Priority)
- December 17: USPS Ground Advantage Service & First-Class Mail Service (including greeting cards)
- December 18: Priority Mail Service
- December 20: Priority Mail Express Service
Do not forget to check with your local post office regarding international mail. Did you know that USPS was closed for New Year’s Day, along with Christmas? Moreover, were you aware of these deadlines? Let us know in the comments below.
