Ohio Dad Sentenced For Leaving 2-Year-Old Daughter In Burning Car
Drinking and driving can result in serious consequences. An Ohio dad learned that lesson the hard way after the heartbreaking but preventable death of his daughter. Young Girl, 2, Left To Die In Burning Car
A driver in American Township, Ohio, called the police after seeing a car on fire on the side of the road. The Allen County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call and reported that the vehicle was “fully engulfed” when they arrived. They noticed a man later identified as Nicholas Stemen, 34, standing near the vehicle.

The police asked him if anyone else was in the car, and he answered no. He told them that he had a daughter, but she was safe with her grandfather. Except she wasn’t. According to PEOPLE magazine, a firefighter looked into the car and saw “skin and blood” in the backseat. The man’s toddler was in the car seat the whole time.
Her father was arrested and hit with multiple charges. A little over a year after the September 2024 incident, justice was served for the young girl, Lillyanna Stemen.

Nicholas Stemen was back in court on Monday, November 17, to find out his fate. The Ohio father pleaded guilty to several charges, including aggravated arson, involuntary manslaughter, and child endangerment. He told the investigators at the time of the incident that he had at least 10 alcoholic beverages before crashing the car with his daughter in it.

He got 22 to 31 years in prison on all of the charges. Law & Crime reported that the father addressed the court during the sentencing hearing. “I know what my actions caused. Now I won’t get to see my little girl grow up, and that hits me to my core. I’m sorry I took her away,” he said.
Devastated Mother Speaks Out At Sentencing
The little girl’s obituary described her as “loving, smart, outgoing, bubbly, and energetic.” Her favorite things to do were “coloring, car rides, shopping, listening to music, singing, playing with PawPaw and going for walks with him, and making sure everybody knew that she loved them.”

She’ll never get to do any of those things again thanks to her father’s reckless behavior. The girl’s mother spoke out at the sentencing about the heartbreaking loss.
“My baby girl is gone. And for what? For her father enjoying a night of drinking? He killed her. He took her from everyone who loved her so much,” Lillyanna Stemen’s mother said in a letter read at the hearing.
It will be decades before her father is out of prison, but the young girl’s memory will live forever.
