ABC News Correspondent Dead At 69
Anytime a public figure passes away, it is met with mixed emotions. Yet, when it is someone who has been beloved, it is a bitter pill to swallow. Such is the case with a former ABC News correspondent who just died at the age of sixty-nine. That is relatively young in 2025, and no one wants to hear such tragic information. So many have walked through the doors of ABC and have left a huge mark and impression on the audience. Unfortunately, this anchor was part of the network’s family, won awards, but sadly faced health issues, and is now at peace.

Jim Avila was born in 1956 in Lombard, Illinois. He began working for NBC before he made his way over to ABC, where he remained for many years. There, he was a political and legal correspondent, reporting on prominent celebrity cases and more. His work garnered him Emmys as well as the Merriman Award from the White House Correspondents Association. Unfortunately, his health was struggling, and he needed a kidney transplant, which he received from his brother. That was not enough to sustain him, and Jim passed away at his California home on November 12th, 2025.
Per his obituary, the ABC News legend is survived by his mother, Eve Simon, his sister, Karie Simon, and his brothers, Tom Simon and Jaie Avila. Both Tom and Jaie have made names for themselves in the news arena, so it shows how powerful this business is to the family.
More To The Story
Furthermore, the ABC News correspondent has left behind his three beloved children, who were his pride and joy: Jamie, Jenny, and Evan. He always spoke of how much he loved and cherished them, and they will be his biggest legacy. Once news broke that Jim Avila had passed away, fans who had known and loved him sent in their love. Of course, they were shocked by his passing and wanted to make their condolences known:
- Mr. Avila was one of the best! Pure class.
- Sorry to hear that. Remember him well on chicago newscasts. Too young.
- Always liked watching him when the news people had integrity and honesty…..something that has disappeared these days. Good guy & 69 years old is too young to die
The general consensus was that he was a good man, enjoyable to watch, and too young to die. Hopefully, he is at peace, and his family sees how much he was appreciated.
