Dick Cheney, the 46th vice president, has died at age 84. He served two terms with Republican President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009. He had a pretty big and very controversial presence in Washington politics for decades. Still a hardcore conservative in his later years, Cheney was generally shunned by his party for his harsh criticism of President Donald Trump.

A statement from his family said that Dick Cheney, America’s most polarizing vice president and, some say, the main architect of the “war on terror,” had passed away. Cheney helped take American troops into the Iraq War.

Statement On Dick Cheney’s Passing At 84

His family said:

“His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him as he passed,”  adding that he died due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease.

“Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing,” the family added.

“We are grateful beyond measure for all Dick Cheney did for our country. And we are blessed beyond measure to have loved and been loved by this noble giant of a man.”

Party lines divide the country over Dick Cheney’s legacy, making him a highly controversial political figure. Mr. Cheney was involved in a freak accident in 2006. He was quail hunting and accidentally shot his 76-year-old acquaintance. The man lived but suffered a collapsed lung and a heart attack.

Dick Cheney Crosses Party Lines, Shocking The Conservative Side

He threw yet another controversial twist into a remarkable political career, he voted for liberal Democrat and fellow vice presidential club member Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, reflecting his loud rejection of his traditional conservatism.

After receiving a heart transplant in 2012, which he praised in a 2014 interview as “the gift of life itself,” Cheney, who had suffered from cardiovascular illness for the majority of his adult life and survived multiple heart attacks, lived a long, active life and retired for many years.
