‘Deadliest Catch’ Sig Hansen Talks Retirement After Health Scare
Discovery’s Deadliest Catch reality show has been entertaining fans since 2005. The show gives viewers a glimpse at the dangerous world of crab fishing in the Bering Sea. Boats leave Dutch Harbor, Alaska, with the hope of returning with their quotas met. Captain Sig Hansen has been a fan favorite since the first season. He recently spoke out about retiring from the stressful fishing career after a health scare.
Sig Hansen Suffers Serious Health Scare In Dramatic Season Finale
Season 21 of Deadliest Catch wrapped up in October in a dramatic fashion. After two previous heart attacks, Captain Sig Hansen suffered another serious health scare. He reported feeling dizzy and short of breath before collapsing on the F/V Northwestern fishing vessel.

After returning to land, he visited his doctor. The doctor suggested that he cut back on caffeine and quit smoking. He also broached the idea of retirement, which Sig Hansen quickly shut down.
“I don’t see that happening. Quite, frankly, I don’t want to,” the stubborn Captain, 59, said. In a new interview, he reveals if he’s changed his mind amid the medical emergency at sea.
Deadliest Catch Fan Favorite Breaks Silence About Retirement
Sig Hansen has been crab fishing since he was a teenager. It’s all he knows. But he also knows just how dangerous the job is. He told PEOPLE magazine in a new interview that he thinks about retirement all the time. “I think I’ve got a few more years left in me,” he said.
“I think about it all the time. And when I do think about retiring, it’s only because I’ve lost so many people, and I’m more fearful every time we go out on the water. And so that’s very true, a part of it is just, you think about your own mortality, and I’m fearful,” the Deadliest Catch star said.

He added, “I’ve been there, done that, and now I want to spend more time with my family, my wife [June]. Look at all the years and decades that she’s given up for me, waiting. It’s got to go the other way.”
Who Might Replace Him
Sig Hansen’s daughter, Mandy, joined the Northwestern as a crew member in Season 10. After years of hard work, she was promoted to a Captain for Season 21. She’s more than qualified for the job, but her dad isn’t sure if she’s the right person to replace him.
“Mandy is a go-getter, she’s got the right attitude. If she does want to take over permanently, or her husband, Clark, who’s with us as well, and he’s doing a tremendous job, I don’t have a problem with it. But I do feel like she’s got other avenues as well,” he said.
He revealed that she works in real estate as well as crab fishing because fishing can be so unpredictable. “The point to all that is at least she has something to fall back on, because fishing is volatile. The income is so volatile, up and down, that it’s not something that you can really count on at times,” Captain Sig Hansen explained.
The Deadliest Catch star said that retirement is “going to happen” eventually, but he’s not ready just yet. Discovery has yet to renew the show for Season 22.
