CBS News Anchor Quits Unexpectedly

CBS suddenly canceled The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in July. The late-night show goes off the air in May 2026. The network cited financial reasons amid a plan for Paramount Global, which owns CNN, to merge with Skydance Media. The merger went through in August.

The full effects of the merger are just now spilling through the network. In a shocking announcement, a popular CBS News anchor announced they were leaving.

John Dickerman and Maurice Dubois took over the CBS Evening News earlier this year. The news program moved from Washington, D.C., back to Manhattan for the reboot. John Dickerman announced on social media on Monday, October 27, that he was leaving the network at the beginning of the year. He joined CBS in 2009 as a moderator of Face the Nation. But now he’s leaving after sixteen years.

“Local news: At the end of this year, I will leave CBS, sixteen years after I sat in as Face the Nation anchor for the first time. I am extremely grateful for all that CBS gave me — the work, the audience’s attention and the honor of being a part of the network’s history — and I am grateful for my dear colleagues who’ve made me a better journalist and a better human. I will miss you,” he wrote on Instagram.

The departure comes just months after he publicly slammed the Skydance and Paramount merger. “We pride ourselves on our BS detector, so it ought to work on ourselves, too,” he said on the streaming series, CBS Evening News Plus.

New Paramount Executive Producer Announces ‘Bloodbath’ Layoffs

CBS Evening News Plus and CBS Mornings Plus are no more. Both streaming shows will end amid mass layoffs at the network. The Guardian reports that hundreds of CBS staffers were let go through a mass email earlier this week.

One fired staff member called the unexpected layoffs a “bloodbath.” At least 1,000 employees at Paramount were expected to get laid off too. The company is cutting costs after the merger.

“In some areas, we are addressing redundancies that have emerged across the organization. In others, we are phasing out roles that are no longer aligned with our evolving priorities and the new structure designed to strengthen our focus on growth,” David Ellison, the chief executive of Paramount Skydance, wrote in the leaked memo.

The race and culture unit at CBS shut down amid the layoffs. Television viewers can expect more layoffs across all the networks as the media makes major changes to policies and broadcasts.
