Florida Bus Crash Injures 6 Students, 2-Year-Old Airlifted In Critical Condition

Eight people were recently injured after three buses crashed in Florida following a band competition. Among those injured was a 2-year-old child, who reportedly needed to be airlifted in critical condition. In addition, six students were also said to have been injured by the recent crash.

An SUV Crashing Into A Bus Led To A Chain Reaction

On the evening of October 11, around 150 students from Fort Pierce Central High School were traveling across four buses in Florida. They were reportedly returning home from a band competition.

Things took a turn for the worse in Manatee County, when three of the buses stopped in a line after a Ford SUV collided with the rear of the last bus. The crash caused a chain reaction, causing each of the buses to hit the bus in front of it.

According to WPBF, which shared information from a Florida Highway Patrol news release, after the buses collided, the SUV also reportedly caught on fire. Six students had to be transferred to local hospitals, having suffered from minor injuries.

The following Sunday, five of the six students have since been released. At the time, one student was said to be remaining at the hospital for observation.

In addition to the students, the driver of the SUV, described as a 32-year-old woman from Tampa, was also injured in the collision, having been treated for minor injuries. In addition, a two-year-old child in the Ford was also injured. The child reportedly had to be airlifted to a nearby hospital.

The Father Of One Student Taking The Bus Also Discussed What Happened

Since the incident, the school district shared that it was grateful to Manatee County Schools’ education partners for their help with the incident. The schools provided two buses to help transport students to Fort Pierce Central High School on late Saturday night.

St. Lucie County Schools Superintendent Dr. Jon R. Prince also shared in a statement, “Our thoughts are with the students, families, and staff members impacted by last night’s accident. We are incredibly thankful for the immediate response and support from Manatee County Schools, local first responders, and our own team members who worked together to ensure our students’ safety and well-being.”

According to WPTV,after the incident, one of the students who traveled by bus, Ethan Byrnes, called his father, Edward. Speaking with the outlet, Edward shared, “Ethan called us and said that they had been involved in an accident.” He added that his son “refused emergency care on scene last night, probably emotions were running high, but today he has a little stiff area around his neck.”

Edward added that his son is healing but was concerned for those who were hurt. He continued, “Even though it’s not threatening to them, there was someone who was seriously injured. We pray for that person who was seriously injured and that baby, 2-year-old, who was life-flighted last night.” Reportedly, an investigation into the incident in ongoing.
