Substitute Teacher Caught Bringing Cocaine To Vermont Elementary School
A substitute teacher recently got into legal trouble after allegedly bringing cocaine to a middle and elementary school in Vermont. Police have described the incident, which caused the teacher to receive a citation. In addition, a woman whose child was in the teacher’s class has also spoken out about what happened.
School Staff Became Aware Of The Situation After A Student Noticed Odd Behavior From A Teacher
On Wednesday, October 1, 2025, police and local EMS responded to a report of an adult woman under the influence of drugs at Barre Town Middle & Elementary School. This school, which had originally been formed from various local schools, educates kids from Pre-K to 8th grade.
According to police, the woman was identified as a permanent substitute teacher. Reportedly, she was employed by the Barre Unified Union School District.

Authorities identified the teacher as Melissa Martin. It had been noted that school staff were alerted to the situation after a student noticed unusual behavior from Martin.
In an online statement, a police spokesperson shared, “Martin had admitted to school administration that she had cocaine in her jacket pocket, which was located in the classroom she had been teaching in.” School officials removed her from the classroom by the time police arrived at the scene.
A Mother Whose Son Attends The School Shared His Account Of The Classroom
The statement continued, “Barre Town K9 Lakota was brought in, and she ultimately alerted to the presence of narcotics in both a jacket, as well as a backpack belonging to Martin. A subsequent search of the jacket revealed a white substance which later yielded a presumptive positive result for cocaine.”
Martin was then issued a citation for possession of cocaine as well as for reckless endangerment. Regarding Martin’s position at the school, police shared, “Any questions regarding Martin’s employment should be directed to the Barre Unified School District.”
Speaking with NBC affiliate WPTZ, Barre Unified Union School District Superintendent JoAn Canning also shared, “The person is not at school now, I do have some personnel steps I need to take.” In addition, the mother of a student attending the school has also spoken out about the situation.
The woman, identified as Brittany, has a son in Martin’s class. She shared a description of her son’s account of the classroom, noting, “He looked visibly shaken and upset and I asked what had happened today and he said that his substitute teacher was clearly on drugs and was acting crazy. Those were his exact words.”
