The Young and the Restless has aired on CBS since 1973. The soap celebrated its 50th season in 2023. In 2024, it was renewed through the 2027-2028 television season. But some fans are ready to turn off the TV and quit watching the daytime drama. Keep reading to find out why.

The Young And The Restless Still Reigns In Ratings

The Young and the Restless has been on for 52 years. It has dominated the daytime ratings for more than half of that. The CBS soap has enjoyed 34 years at the top of the daytime ratings.

There are only five daytime soap operas still on the air, but there were dozens of soaps on during the height of the genre. Another long-running CBS soap, The Bold and the Beautiful, has held the second spot in the ratings for years.

A new CBS soap, Beyond the Gates, premiered in early 2025. ABC’s General Hospital and Peacock’s Days of Our Lives are the other remaining soaps still on the air. The stars of the last remaining soap operas will appear at the Daytime Emmys next month in Los Angeles, California.

Major Changes Coming To Y&R

The Young and the Restless has seen a lot of upheaval in the cast in the last few years. They scored a major win by luring DOOL star Billy Flynn to play a recast Cane Ashby. But fans weren’t happy about the switch, especially when it led to Chance Chancellor (Conner Floyd) being killed off.

In another huge casting coup, soap vets Roger Howarth (Todd Manning, One Life to Live) and Tamara Braun (Days of Our Lives, General Hospital) will join the show soon in mystery roles. Soaps are on strict budgets these days, so the casting news sparked concern about the future of fan-favorite vets.

Fans Threaten Boycott, ‘Can’t Take Anymore’

The revolving casting door in Genoa City isn’t the main issue fans have with the show. According to several viewers, The Young and the Restless committed the worst sin in television: It got boring.

One disgruntled longtime viewer took to social media to rant about why they’re going to stop watching. “After 40+ years . I think Im officially done. Every person is a business , CCOOO CEEOO whatever Money Hungry twat, and the only other type of story line is the ridiculous,” they vented. “This is not the show I used to love.”

Many other fans agreed that the show isn’t good right now. Another Young and the Restless viewer wrote, “I’ve been watching since it started in 1973. It has NEVER been worse.”

A third fan detailed what they hate about the show. They wrote, “It’s just watching constant bickering and whining. And what’s worse, the conversations just rehash the same things. Nothing interesting, creative or exciting. They drink and fight at different restaurants or the park.”

“I barely watch because it’s a snoozefest,” a fourth fan summed up the mass exodus of viewers.

Do you agree that The Young and the Restless is boring right now?

  1. I agree with what everyone else has said about y&r…it’s so sad that after all these year’s so many fans like me have quit watching:( the world has enough winer’s,bullies, & power hungry people we didn’t need it in our soaps also the Mariah & ai story lines are just stupid.
sorry y&r but I have to move on

  2. I agree with all of the above and find myself just fast forwarding through most of it hoping that something new might happen. This Jack and Patty thing is probably the worst and most sickening episode is a long while. Get it over with quick!!!
