Alaska is a booming spot for tourists. But the unfamiliar terrain is a danger. A Texas man, 36, is dead after falling off a mountain while on vacation in the 49th state. How did it happen?

Alaska Is The Latest Tourist Hot Spot

If you go on social media, it seems like everyone was vacationing in Alaska this year. The state has a little over 740,000 residents, which is a low number compared to the size of Alaska. But much of the state remains uninhabited, scaring travelers away.

The tourism industry in Alaska has been booming in recent years after decades of being viewed as an unreachable location. About 2.65 million out-of-state visitors traveled to Alaska in the summer of 2023. Cruise ships and airplanes are the most popular travel options. The state can also be reached by car or ferry.

One of the main attractions for vacationing on a cruise ship is the excursions. The ships dock at various locations to give passengers the chance to explore. One of the most popular ports in Alaska is at Mount Roberts in the capital city of Juneau.

The Mount Roberts Tramway, now known as the Goldbelt Tram, takes visitors up 3,819 feet to the top of the tramway on the mountainside. There are restaurants, gift shops and a nature center where the tram stops. There are also trails leading up or down the mountain for hikers.

A distress call was reported to 911 on Tuesday, September 16. Two hikers from a cruise ship fell down the mountain while hiking. One man suffered injuries but was okay. The other man “had slid further down the mountain and was located by drones,” according to PEOPLE magazine. Sadly, the second man succumbed to his injuries.

The man was later identified as Britian Pool, 36, who was on vacation from Texas. Alaska State Police spokesperson Tess Williams told the media that the two men had taken a wrong path where the tram takes passengers from the cruise ship.

She added that it was foggy and rainy, which made the trail “slick.” The poor conditions likely played a role in the men losing their footing and falling down the side of the mountain.

Another Death On The Same Mountain Earlier This Year

Mount Roberts is a popular spot for tourists to visit. The mountain receives over 200,000 visitors every year, many whom want to hike up or down the mountain. The location had another death earlier this year.

A 62-year-old woman from Kentucky was found dead on the mountain in July. Her family reported her missing after they hadn’t heard from her in a few days. She had told her family about her plans to hike Gold Ridge to Gastineau Peak.

She never made it. Her body was found by a helicopter 1,700 feet below the ridge line of Gold Ridge.
