Derek Hough Set To Join ‘Extra’ As New Host
Fans know Derek Hough from his work on Dancing with the Stars. However, it’s recently been shared that he’s adding a new job on his resume: he’s going to be the new host of Extra. Hough even shared a statement about his upcoming new role on the show.
Derek Hough Will Be Taking Over For Billy Bush On Extra
Extra is a syndicated news broadcast focusing on the entertainment industry, first coming out in 1994. Back in 2019, Billy Bush was hired as the series’ host, taking over for Mario Lopez. Beforehand, Bush was known for his work with Access Hollywood and Today.
It has recently been announced that Derek Hough will be joining Extra as a new host. Known for his background as a dancer, fans know him best as a dancer and a judge on Dancing with the Stars.
As shared by Us Weekly, Hough released a statement about joining the show on August 13, 2025. Looking back on his background as a dancer, he shared, “The ballroom has been my stage, my home and my launchpad. Now, I’m stepping into an exciting new spotlight as the host of Extra.”
Hough continued, “I’m truly looking forward to collaborating with this incredible team, diving into this next creative chapter and connecting with fans and audiences in a whole new way.” Calling the new role “an honor,” he teased a “bold, fresh new era for season 32 and beyond.”
As the publication noted, the upcoming season is set to premiere on September 8, complete with Hough joining as host. He will also be working alongside weekend host Mona Kosar Abdi and correspondent Terri Seymour.
Fans Are Expected To Continue To See Hough On Dancing With The Stars
Despite the new role, Hough is also still expected to return as a judge for Dancing with the Stars during its upcoming 34th season. He has also recently announced that he is expecting his first child with his wife, Hayley Erbert.
For his part, Bush previously shared that he was leaving Extra back in May. At the time, he also wanted to focus more time on his podcast, “Hot Mics.”

At the time, Bush also shared, “Extra is culturally iconic. If I had a dollar for every time someone hollered, ‘Extra! Extra!’ to me in the airport or something, I’d buy Warner Bros.”
