Towards the end of 2024, Steve Sr. pleaded guilty to crop insurance fraud. Taking the plea deal, he could face up to 30 years in prison without a chance at parole. This is due to the charge being a Class B felony.

Since this news has come out, fans have watched the impact that this has had on the McBee family. In addition, fans have also grown concerned about the legal implications this could have, like charges placed on Steve Sr.’s children. This includes his four son: Steven Jr., Jesse, Cole and Brayden.

According to DNT/Progressive Farmer, Steve Sr.’s plea deal may ultimately protect his family from further charges. As part of the agreement, the U.S, government agreed “not to bring any additional charges against McBee, any of his farm entities, or any member of his family in connection with the crop insurance fraud committed from Jan. 1, 2018, through Dec. 31, 2020.”

Steve McBee Sr. Is Set To Be Sentenced In Kansas City On September 9, 2025

The agreement read, “If the defendant breaches this plea agreement, the United States retains the right to proceed with the original charges and any other criminal violations established by the evidence.” Added to this, U.S. attorneys have agreed to suggest a reduced sentence should Steve Sr. agree to cooperate.

That said, Steve Sr.’s sentence will also be determined by what the court agrees was lost by the fraud committed from 2018 to 2020. At this time, he is scheduled for sentencing on September 9, 2025, in Kansas City. Previously, it had been scheduled for June before it had been postponed.

The U.S. government maintained that the loss from fraud was somewhere between $3.5 million to $9.5 million. With Steve Sr.’s plea deal, he is entitled to a three-level reduction in his sentence. With the deal, he may also lose eligibility for farm programs. He is also expected to forfeit assets if needed in order to make restitution.
