American Idol welcomed Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood to the judging panel. She joined Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. It’s been a huge discussion as to whether or not it was one and done for Underwood or if she plans to return next season. She has been rather vague about her intentions regarding the hit singing competition. However, while Carrie remains undecided, it seems the executive producer does want her to return. Keep reading to get all the details.

American Idol Executive Producer Wants Carrie Underwood As Judge

American Idol fans have been looking for confirmation as to whether or not country superstar Carrie Underwood will be returning for the 2026 season of the show. Carrie herself has been rather vague about her intentions. When asked about the possibility of being a judge for another season by Entertainment Tonight,  Underwood just said she didn’t know. She went on to say there was a lot to contemplate.

The show has been waiting to reveal if the three current judges are making a comeback. It’s unclear whether Carrie and producers have reached an agreement off-screen and are just keeping it quiet for now.

However, executive producer Megan Michaels really loved having Carrie on Season 23. Her incredibly nice compliments indicate that she would love to see Underwood back for Season 24 of the American Idol competition.

She believes Carrie really took the reins and did a fantastic job during her first season judging. Michaels spoke with TV Line, and her words make it seem like the ball is in Carrie’s corner. If she wants to return, they would love to have her. Here is what Megan said,

“[Carrie] really had to carve out her own role. She was stepping into the shoes of a former judge, but she needed to be her own person, and she definitely did that. I think she brought a nostalgia factor, and I also like that she brought a little criticism and constructive feedback, which is very much needed. She knows back in her day how hard she was pushed every week to become the best. So I think she’s brought a lot to the show, and I hope people love it.”

Fans Have Voiced The Need For Harsher Judging

Many American Idol fans have voiced throughout Season 23 that the judges need to be a bit harsher. Many even looked back to the days of Simon Cowell. He was not afraid to say what he was thinking, even if it did border on the line of cruel.

His judging and mentoring of these young competitors really helped them grow. Carrie has spoken of that and noted that his words made her work harder.

Some fans think the judges have become more like cheerleaders instead of actual judges. With the EP saying that Carrie was able to dish out a little criticism, can she step up and do more of that next season?

So far, no official announcements have been made about Carrie’s return. However, it seems her return could be happening.

What did you think of her first season of being a judge on American Idol?

Stay tuned for more updates.
