During a recent episode of the show, Whoopi welcomed back viewers from a break while talking about the discourse in the Beckham family, specifically concerning Brooklyn Beckham. As she shared, “So, apparently for years there have been rumors of a Beckham family feud, stemming from Brooklyn’s wedding to actress Nicola Peltz in 2022, where Nicola clashed with mother-in-law Victoria recently. Brooklyn and Nicola have been no shows at major teen family events like David Beckham’s 50th birthday.”

At this point, Goldberg then adopted a “valley girl” voice and asked, “‘What’s your take on all of this?’ I’m like, ‘Oh my God, I’m so upset about it.'” She continued to use this voice throughout the conversation to inject, at one point saying, “I don’t think so, because, wait, I’m sorry. No, but you know, but like, if she doesn’t show that she has her own taste, and like, who she is, so that she’s not like in Victoria Beckham’s like shadow,” in a mocking tone, while talking about Nicola not wearing Victoria Beckham’s dress for her wedding.

In fact, Whoopi ended the conversation sharing, “Oh my God, we have to go to break. It’s so freaky.”

Some Fans Thought The Voice Was Funny, Others Found It Insulting

As fans on social media noted, she’s done this voice before, and some viewers don’t like it. One fan noted, “Whoopi needs to stop the valley girl act. It’s so old and tiring like her.” They continued, “I’m sorry. But she needs to quit the valley girl act. Her antics during the Beckham discussion today was so embarrassing.”

“Completely distracts from the actual convo. Why don’t the EPs tell her to stfu in her earpiece? Why can’t she just stay quiet like how she does when she’s bored? Always trying to get attention.”

Many fans shared similar sentiments in the comments. A few fans thought it was ageist, finding it was used to mock stories concerning younger celebrities. Others felt it was Whoopi poking fun at some of the less serious topics. Some comments included:

  • “I just wish they could have topical conversations without her introducing them in that voice. It feels disrespectful and dismissive. The view used to be all about those kinds of questions. There’s no need to act like no one wants them to be part of the show still. Sometimes it’s nice to move away to something less political.”
  • “It is funny. It shows how vapid the next question is. I always hate when they shift from important discussions into the ‘Housewives of Wherever’ discussions.”
  • “I hate it too. If she doesn’t want to comment on the lighter topics, then don’t. But damn, at least don’t derail the topic. That’s why Fridays and the Weekend View flows so much better because Whoopi isn’t there and Joy is at the helm.”
  • “I find it to be more ageist than anything. It’s usually when the topic concerns women in their ’20s and 30s. The voice trivializes things many women in this age range care about. It’s also super dated. ‘Valley Girl’ stopped being a thing decades ago; it’s vocal fry now.”
