‘The View’ Sara Haines Talks Why She Left NBC

Sara Haines is known for her co-hosting duties on The View. Prior to this, however, she worked with a variety of shows throughout her career, including Today. Recently, Haines opened up about why she ultimately found herself leaving NBC.
Sara Haines Had Been Part Of Today Before Joining The View
Haines originally appeared as a guest co-host on The View, eventually becoming a permanent part of the table in 2016. In 2018, she left the show to co-host GMA Day, later renamed Strahan and Sara. After briefly returning as a guest co-host, Haines would return to The View with its 24th season.
Prior to joining The View, Haines had worked on a variety of famous talk shows. She started her career with the NBC Page Program, later working with Today in the early 2000s. By 2009, she was Today‘s fourth-hours contributing correspondent, eventually leaving in 2013. She would then start working with ABC, such as serving as a correspondent for Good Morning America.
Haines recently appeared on the Question Everything podcast, Haines shared the story with Danielle Robay. During the conversation, Haines alleged that NBC personnel held her back from becoming a more prominent personality at the network.
At one point, Robay said to Haines, “You get to Hoda [Kotb] and Kathie Lee [Gifford]. You have an amazing experience, but then the executives at NBC say something to you that I wouldn’t even call this a wall, this is debilitating to me.”
Haines shared her own attempts at furthering her career with the network. She noted, “It was the end of a contract, and I’d approached them about more of the hosting roles, because I loved being in the field. But again at the expense of never having tried, I wanted a shot in the hosting chairs.”
‘The View’ Co-Host Admitted The Decision To Leave NBC Wasn’t Made Lightly
“[Former CEO] Jeff Zucker, who I was a big fan of, had put me in a few times. He said, ‘I’ll let you swing,’ and he was known for taking chances. But, he left the company, and then I was no longer asked. I asked people that knew me for years said, ‘We don’t see you doing that.’”
Haines continued that even “one pivotal person [who] was at the head of the fourth hour” told her, “‘I love you, I don’t see you doing that.'”
Haines then revealed that ABC previously approached her with other projects. At the time, she shared that she didn’t know where joining the network would take her.
However, Haines knew there wasn’t much chance of advancement with NBC. As she shared, “I was absolutely told what would happen at NBC. It was, ‘We love you, we will keep you, you’ll keep doing this, you’re awesome, this is it.’”

“Hearing it was the end of the road when I had so many things I needed to prove to myself still, I had dreams of being on The View, I had dreams of being on a talk show. This is it? I’m not done yet.”
Ultimately, Haines felt that she “had to go” and move on with a new career with The View. Despite this, Haines assured her decision wasn’t one made lightly. As she revealed, she “was a mess for a good year” following her departure from the network.
