The Today Co-Anchors Shared The News Of Uche Ojeh’s Passing While Fighting Back Tears
Sheinelle Jones had taken a leave of absence from the show around the start of the year. While alluding to a family issue, Jones had kept the situation private.
Over the ongoing months, Jones’ co-stars on Today continued to talk about her. During this time, they assured they were keeping in touch with Jones.
On an episode of Today airing on Friday, May 23, Jones’ Today co-hosts shared tragic news amid tears. Jones’ husband Uche Ojeh had passed away at the age of 45 due to brain cancer.
Savannah Guthrie broke the news. She shared, “With profound sadness, we share this morning that Uche Ojeh, the husband of our friend and Today co-host Sheinelle Jones, has passed away after a courageous battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer called glioblastoma.”
“There are no words for the pain we feel for Sheinelle and their three young children. Uche was an incredible person. We all loved him.”
Guthrie touched on the couple’s faith during Uche’s final months. She noted, “Sheinelle was so strong through all of this, as was Uche. Very, very strong.”
Sheinelle Jones Also Shared A Clip Of The Segment On Social Media
Craig Melvin noted he was close friends with Ojeh, even playing golf with him this past fall. He noted his love for his children, saying, “he loved those kids more than anything else in this world. He was that dad that was on the sidelines at every soccer game. He was at all the concerts and recitals. He was that guy.” Uche and Sheinelle had shared three children together, Kayin, Uche, and Clara.
Jenna Bush Hagar also noted how strong Sheinelle was during this time. She added, “She found the grace in the grief, which is not easy. I know when we’ve all spoken to her, we’ve just been completely inspired.”
On Instagram, Jones herself broke her silence over what happened with a post sharing a clip of the Today segment. In the caption, she wrote, “Thank you, for all of your love and support.”
Many of Jones’ co-stars continued to share their support in the comments. Guthrie noted, “Uche was an extraordinary person. Full of light and heart and faith. Sheinelle, my dearest, we love you and the kids with all of our hearts. I marvel at your strength. You are surrounded by love now and forever.”
Dylan Dreyer also noted, “Hoping you can find peace in the love and prayers that surround you and your incredible children. I’m so lucky to have known Uche and his spirit lives on in your family. Love you, Sheinelle.”
