Shemar Moore Confirms Hondo Is Back, New Spin-Off, ‘S.W.A.T Exiles’

Fans of S.W.A.T. recently saw the show come to an end with the season eight finale. However, this won’t be the last fans will see of the franchise. Series star Shemar Moore recently announced the news of a spin-off series, S.W.A.T EXILES.

Shemar Moore Had Some Big News For Fans On Instagram

S.W.A.T. was an adaptation of the 1975 series of the same name. Actor Shemar Moore played Sergeant II Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson Jr., who leads the LAPD’s Special Weapons and Tactics unit.

The series, which premiered in 2017, lasted for eight seasons. However, the series proper aired its conclusion on May 16, 2025. That said, Moore himself shared that wasn’t the last fans will see of him as Hondo.

In a post on Instagram, Moore shared, “You heard it here first, Hondo’s not done yet. Be on the lookout for S.W.A.T EXILES – he’s back not just to lead, but to rebuild. New recruits. No second chances.”

In a video message, Moore shared “Today’s a great day. Shemar Moore in the building. Eight years strong.” He continued to thank the show’s supporters, “To all my homies, fans, baby girls, to everybody out there around the world who have supported us for eight years, first of all, thank you. Thank you, we couldn’t’ve done this without you.”

“I know the sad news is we got canceled. But the good news is, we don’t stop fighting. And guess what happens when you don’t stop fighting? We won. S.W.A.T. ain’t going nowhere. Hondo ain’t going nowhere. There’s a new version of S.W.A.T. coming your way. Yeah, I said it…It’s gonna be called S.W.A.T. EXILES.”

“Hondo! Back in the building! S.W.A.T.! Back in the building! Starts shooting this summer. Say it loud, say it proud. S.W.A.T. and Hondo, back in the building!”

According to TV Line, Sony has released the official logline for the series. As it read, “After a high-profile mission goes sideways, [Hondo] is pulled out of forced retirement to lead a last-chance experimental SWAT unit made up of untested, unpredictable young recruits. Hondo must bridge a generational divide, navigate clashing personalities, and turn a squad of outsiders into a team capable of protecting the city and saving the program that made him who he is.”

Moore Also Released Another Statement Over The Spin-Off, As Did Showrunner Jason Ning

The spin-off is currently set for ten episodes. Production will start this summer in Los Angeles, with Jason Ning serving as showrunner. At this time, the series isn’t attatched to a U.S. network or streaming service.

Moore also released another statement over the spin-off. According to the actor, “My eight seasons on S.W.A.T. have been epic and memorable. We entertained the world, defied the odds, came back from the dead twice, and continued to woo fans and families worldwide.
