American Idol recently saw Season 23 come to an end. While plenty of contestants got fans talking this season, only one could be the winner. As for who that winner is, some fans are confused. Some recently took to social media to question what was going on.

The Stars Came Out For American Idol‘s Season 23 Finale

American Idol recently cut its current contestants down to the final 3. The three hopeful Idol winners were John Foster, Breanna Nix, and Jamal Roberts.

The season finale was a star-studded event. Viewers were treated to appearances from Patti LaBelle, The Goo Goo Dolls, Jessica Simpson, and Good Charlotte, among others. That said, the big draw of the event was the three contestants.

Ultimately, Roberts would prove to be the winning contestant. However, some fans have been hearing, and sharing, a different story online.

On social media, one fan shared they got a surprise when they looked up the results. As they showed in a screenshot, the search results claimed that John Foster was American Idol‘s most recent winner.

As the fan wrote, “This is odd.” They also shared they weren’t sure “if this is just a goof by the AI or if something is up lol.”

A few fans thought the AI explanation made sense. As one fan pointed out, “A lot of people thought John was the forgone winner based on his social media views. The AI doesn’t know what’s going on so it approximates an answer based on what it searches.”

Some Fans Shared They Had Seen Other Articles Declaring The Wrong Winner

As a few fans noted, there’s also a special reason why American Idol news could be affected by artificial intelligence. “AI” is also the show’s initials.

Another issue present in the results, as some fans noted, is that Foster was said to be the winner of “Season 25.” The show only just wrapped up Season 23. The date also appeared to be wrong, saying the finale took place two days before it actually occurred.

Interestingly enough, Foster himself had already been subject to quite a few misconceptions during his time on the show. As previously reported, Foster himself even took to social media to address misconceptions about his age and his hometown.

Ultimately, even fans who missed the finale have a few ways of knowing who won. American Idol shared Roberts’ win in a recent video on their YouTube page. Similar posts also appeared on the show’s Instagram page congratulating Roberts.

In the comments, fans seemed to support the “AI” theory, while some suggested websites might have accidentally published a “dummy” article written in anticipation of the results. Some comments included:

  • “Just a reminder that AI should always stand for American Idol and not Artificial Intelligence.”
  • “Well, it’s AI, but it says John won on the 16th. Jamal’s win is on the 18th. Silly robot.”
  • “The same thing happened to me when I googled it a few hours ago! Then I saw posts here saying Jamal so I googled again. So weird!”
  • “I saw a similar story on a different site about 10 minutes before they even announced the winner and when I went back to the same site, the had a disclaimer that they’d erroneously posted.”
  • “There were articles that put out that John was the winner before the winner was announced. I actually say 2 myself while watching the show live. AI picks up what’s already out there so I’m assuming that why AI said that.”
