‘American Idol’ Fans Blast Voting Night Unfair To Half It’s Viewers

The viewers have the power when it comes to American Idol. After all, they help choose which of the contestants will end up the winning finalist. At least, that’s how it’s supposed to be. Recently, however, fans are claiming that the show’s voting format is unfair to certain viewers, among other issues.
American Idol Fans Have The Power, Or At Least They’re Supposed To
On American Idol, judges might determine who gets on the show. However, it’s the viewers at home that determine the ultimate fate of these contestants.
Over the years, fans have made their votes heard through telephone lines, apps, SMS messages, and online platforms. However, with the series currently in its 23rd season, fans have recently been taking to social media to voice their criticisms of the voting format.

One fan recently shared, “What sucks is when you are on the West Coast and your vote does not count.” They continued, “I really believe results night should be on Monday night instead of Sunday because West Coast people have different tastes too… and our vote should count too but how can it when results are read Sunday night? Just my opinion.”
While people on the West Coast can vote, the voting has to take place before the Eastern broadcast wraps up. This means they have to vote before seeing the final performances.
Some Fans Also Have Issues With When The Voting Starts, Too
As one fan explained, “You have to vote on East Coast time. You might be able to see it live depending on your tv providers. If not, just vote for your favorites and assume they did well. I did that last week.”
Taking to the comments, fans shared other issues they have with American Idol‘s voting system. In particular, one fan noted, “I really wish they wouldn’t open up the voting till all contestants have sung. Results next episode.” Another fan replied, “Yeah, surely, the final few singers of the night are kind of screwed. If ones on the fence of making it sings near the end they are probably doomed.”

Other fans have been sharing similar sentiments in the comments. A few compared the situation to other similar shows with voting platforms. Some comments included:
- “It’s the dumbest voting set up of all time.”
- “I’m In Nevada I hate it.. I feel like only East coast votes count. So why [bother.]”
- “What do u mean American idol isn’t even popular in the west coast.”
- “It does count.. you just have to figure out what time it’s on in your time zone. If you have ABC you can watch it live on the west coast, I believe it’s at 5 pm. Or if you are at work, you can still vote live you just have to pay attention to what time it is and vote on your phone.”
- “They do the Same for Dancing with the Stars it becomes a popularity contest where you pick your favs and vote based on that.”
- “Ty I am 2-3 hours behind when show comes on, so I just hate it lol.”
- “I watch through YouTube TV and it still aired at 8:00.”
