Katie Thurston Reveals How First Round Of Chemo Affected Her
Bachelorette star Katie Thurston started treatment for cancer. She was diagnosed in February with breast cancer after finding a painful lump. After a whirlwind of medical tests, she settled on a treatment plan with her doctors. Keep reading to find out how the first round of treatment went.
Katie Thurston Determined To Help Others With Cancer
Katie Thurston found out she had breast cancer early but it could have been earlier. The lump she felt was there for a while before she got it checked. She thought it was a benign cyst like she’d had before. Unfortunately, the lump turned out to be breast cancer.
Since her diagnosis in February, the former reality star has made it her mission to spread awareness about breast cancer, treatment options and the importance of advocating for yourself. She was initially diagnosed with Stage 3. But she changed medical providers after moving to New York City to be with her then-fiance, Jeff Arcuri. The couple are now married after eloping a month after the cancer diagnosis.
Her new medical team did more tests and the cancer is actually Stage 4, but not as aggressive as previously thought. So instead of chemotherapy for treatment, she’s doing oral medication and a monthly injection. She’s optimistic about her chances of beating cancer.
How First Round Of Treatment Affected Her
Even before she started the treatment, she opened up about how the diagnosis changed her intimate life with her husband. In a new post to her Boobie Broadcast Instagram channel, she shared an update on how the first round of treatment affected her.
Her first round of the oral medication Kisqali was three pills a day for three weeks. She used Chat GPT to summarize the known side effects of the medication. The AI summary revealed that it was common to feel the most tired at the end of the treatment because the body was processing the drug.
The Bachelorette star revealed that she has a week’s break from taking the medication. Chat GPT said that the energy level should increase during the break.
Bachelorette Star Has Stark Realization About Cancer Treatment
Katie Thurston revealed that she dealt with the fatigue by taking naps and short rest breaks. Overall, she called the tiredness “fairly manageable,” though she prefers to have more energy. She wondered if the next round of treatment would have the same level of fatigue.
The Bachelorette star also shared a new way to look at her treatment plan. While she had been distinguishing her treatment plan from chemotherapy, she realized they were the same thing.
She revealed that someone calling the drug she’s taking “oral chemo” caused her to have a light bulb moment. Katie Thurston never considered the pills as chemo, but now she realizes they are.
“When you break down the word chemical therapy, I guess in a way, it is,” she wrote. She previously fired back at online trolls who said she wasn’t a real cancer survivor because she isn’t having traditional chemotherapy.
