Police recently responded to a call concerning celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay’s home in Bel Air, after a report was made of a shooting. According to TMZ, law enforcement officials responded to a call at around 8:40 PM on Tuesday. An unknown person had called in with claims of a gunman opening fire at Ramsay’s Bel Air residence.

When the cops arrived, however, nothing appeared out of place. The officers added that they also spoke with neighbors about the situation, who also claimed that nothing had happened. Sources later told the publication that Ramsay wasn’t home at the time.

At this time, police believe the call was a “swatting” incident. This is a type of prank in which someone calls in a fake crime to get law officials or emergency responders to respond , usually arriving at the residence of the target. In many jurisdictions, “swatting” is a criminal offense.

Detectives are currently investigating the call concerning Ramsay’s home. However, no one has been arrested at this time.

According to Rethinking The Future, Ramsay obtained his L.A. home in 2012 for $6.75 million. The building boasts “five bedrooms, six bathrooms, a swimming pool, and a state-of-the-art luxury kitchen.” Ramsay also owns homes in Cornwall and London.

Gordon Ramsay Is Not The Only Star To Have Been Recently Been Subjected To A Swatting Hoax

Ramsay is not the only big name to be the target of a swatting incident in recent news, even in L.A. County. A few weeks prior, officers were called to Nicki Minaj’s Hidden Hills home after reports came in of a shooting. However, much like with the Ramsay case, the reports turned out to be false.

At the time, it was believed the call was made using a business line, which makes it difficult to trace the caller’s identity. Added to that, it had reportedly been the call made. Both are often common signs of a swatting hoax.

Jennifer Aniston of Friends fame also fell victim to a similar hoax last year. Other celebrities impacted by “swatting” incidents over the years include Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chris Brown, Rihanna, and Justin Bieber.

As The Times noted, some swatting incidents have proved deadly. In 2020, a 60-year-old man in Tennessee underwent a fatal heart attack after such a hoax led armed police to arrive at his home. A 2017 incident has seen police shot and kill a man in Kansas after his home was “swatted because of a row over a video game.”
